Re: Buying lessons needed for nice pontoon

Well as a car guy, you recognize buying at low wholesale so you can sell later at retail. I consider the prices you've been quoted as "high wholesale.". My suggestion is to hang back and wait for a deal to come around.

Re: sun tracker party barge owners question

I have a Bennington, however I can address your question. Ventilation will usually occur when your propeller is not deep enough in the water. That means the engine is sitting too high on the transom or when the engine trimmed too high. One other situation is when a bunch of people sit up front--lift...

Re: How many dock lines?

I always use 4 docking lines. I purchase a 50 foot bag of hollow rope, cut it in 4 pieces and put a loop on each end threading the ends of the rope inside the hollow rope. That gives me 4 nine foot sections I put on the 4 cleats on each corner of my boat. I always tie the end of each rope to the fen...

Re: NEED BUYING ADVICE

My favorite brands are Bennington, Manitou, Harris and Premier. But there are another dozen companies I would be proud to own boats from. Quality difference is often in the welding, seats and fencing. But styling, floorplans, availability and A quality dealer base is also important. Honestly, few wa...

Re: Bennington is now owned by Polaris

Bennington is Yamaha.Outboard's largest customer. And Yamaha is a big competitor of Polaris in ATVs and UTVs. Wonder if Polaris might switchover to Mercury as their dominant source of outboard.motors? Congratulations to the two families that owned Bennington. In 19 years, they have built a powerhous...

Re: Wishing I had a boat lift

Most passengers get into boats on cantilever lifts are from the side. Unfortunately you are in the far north where docks and lifts have to be pulled from the water prior to winter. A 4000 to 5000 pound lift would be preferred. T&M Marine, north of Minneapolis, is may be the largest pontoon dealer th...

Re: Need Help - Only getting 4100 RPM @ WOT

I cannot believe a dealer sold you a 150 hp motor for a boat without lifting strakes. Unless you have them, you are missing 10-12 mph and burning much too much fuel. You need to get those nosecones out of the water, and that requires strakes. Try to find another boat like yours with strakes and copy...

Re: PONTOON TUBE REPAIR HELP?

You will need to find someone experienced in working metal, and they are not easy to find. Pontoons are often machine made, but all nosecones have to be made manually. If course most of the manufacturing is in the Elkhart area. Depending on the dent, sometimes holes can be drilled in the dent and a ...

Re: cavitation/ventilation question

First of all, what rpm's are you turning vs. the engine's posted redline? If you appear to be propped about right, look at the engine height. Propeller might need to run lower in the water.

Re: Need Help - Only getting 4100 RPM @ WOT

Didn't you say you have a two toon boat? Do you have lifting strakes? Is your boat rated for a 150 hp motor? Most twin toon boats without strakes are 115 hp rated. Due to their being displacement hulls, they can only get up to about 30 mph--and they just won't go much faster. And they are hard to ge...

Re: New motor, first run... issue with.. ventilation?

Is the new motor the same length shaft as the old motor? Usually ventilation comes from the prop sitting too high. And sometimes having passengers in the front will lift the rear end causing ventilation. Sometimes the rubber in the prop breaks loose and the prop. is slightly spinning. Is it a new pr...

Most larger cities have someone making awnings and/or tents. We have one. They can do such work. My wife and I both went to upholstery school, and some good upholstery shops may can make'em. We have a marine and auto upholstery shop doing a lot of boat work. I made a set of seat covers out of the sa...

Re: Toon cleaning help

Just go to NAPA and get a gallon of their aluminum cleaner. It is an acid based product but safe if used as directed. It is cheaper than the stuff mentioned bought on Amazon. HVAC outside condenser coil cleaners are essentially the same product.
