PONTOON TOP SPEED

#1 Post by B REED » Mon Jan 05, 2009 7:37 pm

New member and new pontoon owner! I have owned a Hurricane Deck boat for years and bought my first pontoon. 2008 sweetwater 2586 dc w/150hp! Really like the boat but have only had it out twice since I bought in late October! Once with the dealer and a short time by myself. I'm concerned the salesman my have pulled a fast one on me! It's two log pontoon and with 4 adults his GPS showed a speed of 34.7 mph! Does this sound high or about right? Seem a little high to me! Not complaining.

A good captain and good conditions and trim should be possible with a 150 easy IMO. My 22 and 90 gets 23 easy

Welcome !

Sounds about right, GPS units are usually dead-on accurate. I get about 18 19 MPH WOT and I have a 32 footer with a 135 HP I/O that's about as aerodymanic as a brick.

I had 22ft fundeck, looked just like a pontoon on topside.Loved the room and top speed(45 mph to 50mph) 3 main factors for buying a pontoon. 1-Deck boat had 305 v8 (not good on gas) 2-No middle cruising speed! I either went 5 to 7 mph or went 30 mph to 40 mph! (rough ride) 3- and most importantly! I always hang out at this beach( so we can play corn hole) and I always hated anchoring it out and tying to get it to stay put.Now I just run aground about two feet and chill!

OK I lied, my wife wanted a pontoon :tofunny

Nice looking toon! I have heard many of the same arguments! My buddy bought an all aluminum bottom deckboat with a 150 outboard and its pretty nice, I just dont like that the front raises up so much when you take off... I would HATE to spill anyones drink so I bought the most stable boat I could find! Plus Its at dock level rather than having to get down into the seating area!

Got a member going to install one sometime pretty soon. He is going to post installation and results. Far a speed I am right in there with Carl. Got a Bentley 243 (pretty light boat) with a 150 opti. Think Suntracker puts lifting strakes on some of their two log boats as an option. Got six on mine (two on each log) and it gets it up and cut down on drag considerably.
