Boat in the Yard needs Moving

#1 Post by jmas4u » Sat Oct 31, 2015 5:22 pm

Just had a river rise here and was trying to keep my pontoon from floating away. In doing this I pulled it up into the yard, the river went down so fast it is now sitting in my yard 100' from the water. My question is what is the best way to lift the pontoon and return to the water? Hook onto the eyes on the 4 corners? Maybe forklift under the deck? Drag it up near the water and hope to get pulled in or pushed in some how? I'm open to suggestions from anybody who has attempted this. Boat is a 20'er w/60hp engine. Thanks ahead of time.

If you have a forklift big enough to lift it and with long enough forks, that would work. Here's a photo of mine is being launched from dry dock. I wouldn't risk trying to drag it by the eyes. Is there any way to jack it up high enough to slide the trailer under it?

Borrow, beg, or possibly rent a crank up trailer is likely your best bet.

Several pieces( 5 or 6) of 4 " pvc sewer line about ten feet in length will work. You place them under neath the logs and roll it back to the water. 2 or 3 good men can do this. If its down hill, the big problem will be not letting it get away from you.

I have done this and if you have the pipe its real easy, these toons are relatively very light and the pvc will not harm the logs.

A trailer is fine but you have to have something to pull it through your grounds. Hope this helps.

As was said, round wooden logs will work but are more expensive if you have to buy them. And they are heavier.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Forking it will not work nor will rolling due to the terrain. I contacted Godfrey and they said it would be OK to pick up the boat on all 4 corners and place it back into the water or on the trailer. I'm going to get a fork lift and pick it up with a piece of drill pipe and those big yellow tow slings. If I get a chance to take a picture I'll post. Wish me luck.

1. Get an oxy-acetylene torch.
2. Light it, and adjust the oxygen/acetylene mix for the hottest flame you can.
3. Snuff out the flame. (I have found that a 2X4 works OK).
4. Fill 4 33 gallon garbage bags with this perfect mix of oxygen and acetylene.
5. Put the bags under your boat.
6. Figure out a way to simultaneously ignite all 4 bags (I'm not going to give you ALL the answers!).
7. Watch your pontoon reach low earth orbit in less than 10 seconds.
8. Replace all the shattered windows in your neighborhood.

:smoke

Warning: A sandwich sized baggy of oxy-acetylene will blow a metal garbage can lid over 40 feet in the air. Be careful!

Do not ask how I know this.

Bob,

We used to put just a puff of oxy-acetylene in a 2 liter drink bottle, then Screwed the cap back on. Put it in a paper bag, lit the bag and ran like hell. Kaboom!

We used to loft a single 33 gallon trash bag under 3 33 gallon trash bags filled with helium. Tape a black cat to the side of the boom bag,and make a time delay fuse. Light and release. Beautiful air burst!

Time delay fuse:

Soak newspaper strips in a solution of Sodium Nitrate and water (or did we use Potassium Chlorate?). Let it dry completely. Burns about an inch per minute.

Nope. Not even when strong winds caused the boom bag to drift right over the Northglenn (CO) Cop Shop. Of course we were Sh!tt!ng Bricks at the time.
