I've never filled my tank up while on the water so I can't say. Only filled up while on a trailer. I'm wondering if the slight bobbing up and down might be causing the issue. But that does seem strange. I know people fill their tanks on the lake all the time. Hopefully someone will chime here with a better answer for you.

only thing I can think of is that on the trailer the gas tank is more or less level-but in the water the boat sits rear end down probably--this may cause it for some unknown reason....puzzler for sure.

Next time if you have a few people on board-have them get at the front of the boat and you try to fill it w/o being in the boat if possible....like I said ….a puzzler.....

I fill my boat from a couple of 5 gallon portable plastic cans using a "jiggle pump" since I have a boathouse...always carry a 5 gal can with me...

Had a similar problem on my Premier. Took forever to figure out. There's a safety mechanism that the pump on the trailer by passes but that does not get bypassed likely by your Dockside pump. Search ford fuel funnel or Nicemeet funnel. I've attached a pic. Works like a charm and it's cheap. I have no idea why it wasn't standard equipment on the boat!

Jediger-
Glad you solved your problem, but your post arouses my curiosity. What kind of safety mechanism are you talking about?

There's an anti backup valve that the nozzle has to get past somehow. Gas stations with commercial pumps seem to do it just fine. But every time we tried to fill up at the dock it would take forever and we get blowback. Took me months of asking questions and talking to people. The manufacturer finally sent me two of those funnels. Work like a charm! The book sucks down gas like a champ now.
