keeping battery charged with high powered stereo?

#1 Post by Aint Skeered » Wed Apr 21, 2010 4:39 am

I just ordered 4 JBL 6x9's to be powered by a pioneer 250 watt amp. the stock 6.5's are being replaced with good JBL 6.5's. I am mounting the 6x9's under each satee(couch) and should sound pretty good.
IF i dont get enough bass for a clear sound im adding a sub and replacing the 250 watt with a 4 channel 1000 watt amp.
My question stands, im adding a second deep cycle battery on a switch to make sure I always have a battery to crank. What are other steps to take to make sure i keep a charge?

thats a big ass battery.
How do the satee's work for speaker box's? mine are the plastic lower enclosures for my seats, might have to surround with life jackets to help the sound.

eh, they work but mine dont really have a good way to seal em. so any openings between the seats kinda become ports. I run so much power to them it seems to compensate for the excesive audio leaks

You don't crank with a deep cell, that's what starting batteries are for, deep draw batteries are made to play the tunes and run the TM.

Hmm, 1000 watts @ 13.8 Volts is around 72.5 amps an hour of draw
or 12 volts is around 83.3 amps per hour. You need a huge battery or multiple batteries
parelled to provide the current requirements. Keep in mind, that you will need short cable runs to the battery(s) and 0 gauge or larger cables. Big $$$$ to do it correctly!!

Creating an enviroment for speakers is challenging in a car. Add in a boat which has so much wood material for dampening and it gets even more challenging. A pre-packaged sub woofer w/ it's own enclosure might be the way to go. I would fire up the 6X9's and decide if it is giving you the frequency response you need.

Im going to try this 250 watt amp for a while with 4 6x9's on it and the 2 6 1/2" speakers off the stereo. may leave the 2 existing 6 1/2'' speakers to make it 4 6x9's and 4 6 1/2's all together. SHould have plenty of sound to hear it while running and way more then needed when stopped.

Well so far the 4 jbl 6x9's on a 240 watt Pioneer amp and 2 6.5" jbl's on the stereo sounds freaking great. Loud and clear with a nice bass tone . SPeakers are mouted in each satee and produce a lot of bass for a small speaker from such a big encloser.
THis is listening inside my 30x40 metal shop, The real test will be this weekend out on the water, the amp is only half way turned up. if it needs more, ill turn it up and maybe later change it for a bigger amp and add a sub.

Right now, im completely happy with it.

good to hear its coming together :thumbsup :thumbsup

just remember, it can always get louder :rofl :rofl :devillol and wire size makes a huge difference.

example: BF used to have 14awg wire amp to subs. swaped it out for 8awg and gained better clear response and +5dB at the cockpit :devillol

what size power cables are you runing to your amp? you dont wanna starve it :biggrin2

i Am running 8 gauge power wires but only 3 feet to battery. speaker wire is 12 gauge, I thought about running bigger but for 6x9's i figured 12 was good

If i swap out this amp for a bigger amp, ill go bigger on the power cable and when i add a sub ill keep that in mind to go big on the speaker wires.

I actually want to add a sub in each front couch facing back towards me. Will it be ok to share a box (couch) with the front 6x9's? i am using a free air sub when i do it and probably going with a jbl 10" marine sub on each side.
