To Heavy?

#1 Post by Toon Nut » Sat May 22, 2010 10:13 pm

I have a 20' pontoon w/ 21" toons. How much weight can it handle? I'm planning on redecking and exending the deck (it has about 3' feet of toon that is not decked). Someone had 1/2" plywood for the deck, I'm planning on going back with 3/4 treated plywood. Am I to heavy?

No it's not to "heavy" 3/4 in. marine plywood is the standard for pontoon boat decking. There are exceptions with a few models utilizing composites, and aluminum for the decking, but overall the vast majority of the manufactures are using marine plywood. As far as the lumberyard treated plywood, many treatments contain copper as an component which can cause serious issues when it comes into contact with aluminum surfaces.

Treated plywood is crap. I think the highest grade you can get is C/D meaning it is crap. 1/2 would be to thin and have a lot of flex so stay with 3/4.

Never, never use hardware store treated plywood on an aluminum boat. As was said, most contain copper which will react with aluminum and cause severe corrosion. Always use marine grade plywood.

I have a new 2010 tracker 18ft pontoon with 21 inch toons, the manufacturer rates the max carrying weight at 5 persons, [ 600lbs ], it has a 5/8 deck and it seems rather strong if this helps..
