After many years of trial and error, My set up on everything I use for Striper, catfish, crappie etc. is Flouro Leader, Braid Main line and mono backer JMO but it works for me.

I have used many different lines and what I have decided worked best for my type of fishing is Ande mono 25 lb. main line with a 50 lb. leader--
I fish for big blue cats almost exclusively year round--
I use A Santee Cooper rig and I snell a # 6 or a #8 circle hook (I change my size hooks according to the size bait I am using ) and use a Polomar knot to the main line--
I always fish with fresh cut bait or live bait--

Between mono and fluorocarbon I'd have to say Mono. BUT! braid with a fluorocarbon leader is my fav. There are some instances where fluorocarbon may me good as a fishing line but I like it best as a leader since it virtually disappears in water.

I also fish braided with a fluoro leader for my heavy action rods. Firm believer in fluorocarbon.

I've been using Trilene mono and PowerPro braid. For freshwater I like 12 to 14 pound test. Fluorocarbon line sinks, and it seems it's not that good for topwater lures. I've read some reviews on fluorocarbon and I wish I could return Vanish fluorocarbon I bought. Seems knot strength is not good. It's been said over and over your lures will "Vanish" when using it.
