Fishing Matapeake, Kent Island, MD 8-7-2009

#1 Post by badmoonrising » Sun Aug 09, 2009 12:18 pm

NOAA predicting calm seas and under 5 knot winds, I decided to go fishing off of Kent Island (Matapeake) Friday evening with my brothers and nephews. The weather and spring rains delayed our normal start of mid bay fishing (normally mid June). The last several weeks, the fishing reports picked up and it turned out to be a wise decision to go. Mid bay was calm as a pond after sunset and the fish were ready, willing, and able to bite. Pretty much every bait we tried worked, with no real favorites. We brought chicken breasts, shrimp, clam snouts, bloodworms, squid, herring and of course chum for attracting blues and stripers.

Started out at our typical bottom fishing spot in front of Matapeake, 22-25 ft of water. Bite was immediate, we picked up a bunch of blues and croaker. Then I hooked up a big cownose stingray. A fun battle as always, but my brother missed netting it at the boat and my line snapped after a 1/2 hour battle. Will get 'im next time.

Action slowed a bit, so right before sunrise we headed to the bridge pilings to catch bait fish (spot and white perch). Nothing was happening there, so we headed out to deeper water for the night striper/bluefish bite. Hooked up several more blues, a few croaker and just one 21 inch striper.

When action slowed at the bridge around 10:30 PM and the tide changed, I decided to head back to open water in front of Matapeake, where we managed to catch several more croaker and a couple of blues. Also managed to catch a half dozen crabs, some swimming on the surface, some on our lines. Back to dock around midnight.

Back home, cleaned the boat, cleaned fish, and then the captain's feast :)
