Hi Homer,

I retired a few years ago and rediscovered fishing. Catfishing is one of my main reasons for wanting a pontoon.

I had some tackle from 30 yrs. ago, but mostly started over. I'm a cheap, tight-wad, but I don't like wasting money on junk equipment.

For bait fishing, I like Shakespeare's 'Ugly Stick' Catfish model that Walmart has for about $30. I've collected 4 or 5 of these. This rod is white for easy to see at night, tough enough for a bigger fish, yet has a soft tip which works well for bluegills and shellcrackers-just swap reels. You can drop them, throw them, abuse them in most any way without a whimper. A very good value.

For my ABU spincasters, I use Trilene XL Fluorescent Blue (so I can see it) -14# for cats and bream has worked well, casts easy- I may try 17# on 1 reel. For my Zebco 808's and Cabelas Salt Striker Spinning Reel, I'm using Berkley's Trilene Big Cat -Solar Green-20#- this line casts far and is super strong.

Note that casting distance is important as I don't have my own boat. From a boat, Ande and Bass Pro's house brand salt water is very good, but doesn't cast as far as the softer line. I haven't tried braided lines, not sure if I'm going to. I like the 'Uni-Knot' and 'egg' sinkers that keeps the bait on the bottom, yet doesn't offer resistance when a cat bites.

I don't have any bait-casters, but may get some Penn's and 'made in Sweden' ABU's.

For bait, I've caught more cats on Walmart nightcrawlers than any thing else. My buddies like fresh chicken livers and small bluegills.

Check out Cabelas, Bass Pro, Catfish Connection (good prices) and Catfish1.com
