Re: Grand Canyon & Monument valley
You're talking about two of the stops on what is known as The Great Loop, if you're wanting a tour of the Southwest Canyons. I took a "10 day man-cation" with three buddies and traveled from Albuquerque to Las Vegas by Jeep. Two of us flew out, the other two drove from Nashville.
Both parks you mentioned are spectacular in their own way. Others we saw along the way: Mesa Verde, Four Corners, Arches, Dead Horse Point, North Rim of the Grand, Monument, Bryce, and Zion. A drive-by on Lake Powell. The most striking by far was Bryce with it's vivid colors and the "hoodoos". Monument Valley probably was "most majestic". Also lots of movie and John Wayne memorabilia from Stagecoach having been filmed there.
We encountered nothing on this loop I'd say "stay away" from. Lots of Indian roadside stands selling jewelry and trinkets. Now, if you're headed out of Vegas to the West Rim of the Grand, think twice about that trip and pick another choice. You drive forever on dirt roads to find you must fork over another $50 bucks each to ride an Indian bus tour out to the canyon.
If you need hotel suggestions along the route, I can look up where we stayed, but we tried to "sleep cheap".

It will be a great trip. Have fun!
