sun tracker party barge repair

#1 Post by cruiser1911 » Tue Jul 23, 2019 2:32 pm

Im new to the site and new to boat ownership. so still in the fun stages of it. I picked up a n older party barge that has been sitting for a few years and was totally rotted out. I stripped off the deck, console, and 3 different sets of wiring on this thing and am starting a rebuild. I tried using the search but wasn't having much luck. I picked up marine grade plywood and stainless screws. I was going to order vinyl flooring and that was vetoed by the boss she wants carpet. so I am going with carpet. now for waterproofing the plywood, I was thinking about using a layer of cheap household vinyl under the carpet and painting the back side of the plywood with elastomeric roof paint. I dont want to mess it fiberglass and resin right now. would I get 10 years out of that deck? it will be sitting on a the trailer most of the time. I will try to get pictures soon

I think painting would be better than the possible sweating from the vinyl :donno

I dont know, I usually overthink everything and take to long. I guess if it doesn't last I can always redo it. anyway here is some pics I got super helpers.
has anyone used one of those premade consoles with an exterior mount engine control that seems like a way easier way than a metalworker trying to build something out of wood

I think you should try and convince the boss that it would be better to go with vinyl instead of carpet. My son has carpet on his boat and between people climbing on board out of the lake after swimming, and people on the muddy bank climbing on board, his carpet looks like hell. He is able to bring it back to life but it takes a heck of a lot of scrubbing to get all that dirt and grime out of the carpet. After seeing that, when I bought my boat I went with vinyl. I am so happy I did... we fish on our toon all the time so we're always dropping bait, fish, what have you.. two or three times a year I pull into one of those do it yourself car washes and power wash the deck.. seems to do a pretty good job. Now if you don't have kids and it's just going to be adults getting on board and going for leisurely cruises, your carpet should stay in pretty good shape.. but if you got kids, like to fish etc etc., you may be happier with vinyl. Not trying to tell you what to do.. just giving you a little insight... by the way, my son has told me he wishes he had vinyl. just something to think about.

I agree you'd be better off not to use carpet, but if you have to, I recommend you DON'T use household vinyl underneath the carpet and DON'T try to paint the underside. You're more likely to trap moisture inside the layers of plywood than you are to keep moisture out of it. Marine plywood is meant to be used in wet conditions and is on the vast majority of pontoon boats made in the last 50 years. It will be fine and should last a long time.
