I figure that like on most sites you guys might like pic's so I thought I might as well show what I did to buid my boat. This is an abbreviated view of my rebuild but it gives am idea of what I did. Ok the before view !

Image

I have a friend that is a fabricator so he helped me out quite a bit. This is the transom log we came up with. I had bought another old toon for the logs and the then got a manitou transom form pontoon specialists.

Image

I also added 2 ft to the back of the boat where the gas tanks used to sit. I wanted to make a rear deck area.

Image

A finished shot of my frame work before the deck went on.

I added 10" in a radious to the bow and then covered both the front and rear decks with my custom fake teak and carpet to land inside the fence. I saw the plastic teak at the boat show and really liked but the 2 companies making it spend so much on lawyers it wasn't in my budget to use theirs.

Image

We cut and welded in a rear entry gate on the fence and also mounted the rear swim ladder.

A view of my new seats installed ! I had them made by american soft trim here in michigan. They make all the quest boats and while I was there I was shown all around and also got my deck hardware and graphics. It was neat to see boats from strat to finish right down to making the furniture.

Nice ! Where'd you get the fake teak ? I want to do my old Starcraft v-hull deck with something like that.

I just painted the old fence pannels to make it water ready at first. Here is a shot of how it floats on the water with 50 merc. on the back. I set the center log 2" lower and you can see how high it sits for an old toon with small logs.

Image

Fast forward to my second season with the boat and this past summer it was time to get back to work. I mounted a new to me merc. 115 on the back and got this boat moving !!!

Image

After that It was time to get back over to my friends for some more welding. I had made some strakes over the winter and with the new motor I wanted to get those on.

With the strakes on I moved onto the " looks" part of the boat along with the sound system ! Here is a shot of my new fence skin and the trim I used to dress it up. I then put on the graphics that I got from apex marine.

Image

Next I set out to paint my old logs to look like the crestliners I have seen but with a few added details. I left the strakes ,splash guards, and keels to get polished. I still need to polish some of these parts but that will make a great spring project !

Image

I also left the back of the boat with the transom unpainted. You'll see the 50 merc. on the boat again due to a bad day on the water just after i got the boat looking good. My 115 decided to blow a hole in a piston but It was a easy switch to repower back to the 50. While it was a bummer I spend most of my time tied up just floating. The boat with a 50 is still way more fun than sitting on the shore :lol3

Image

And the finished product ( for now ) floating on the water !!! I took this pic the day I lost my 115, go figure !!!

When you get the big engine back on it, please let us know how it performs. I have not seen many 20' boats with third toons and lifting strakes.

You do very good work.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I have enjoyed rebuilding this old boat. Knowing what I know now I wish I would have had a different larger boat to start with. This one fell into my lap so to speak so I went ahead and got carried away with it !

Ok to answer a couple questions. The teak was something I came up with to look like the stuff on the big money boats. To buy the factory made fake teak products it was some where around $18 a square ft. I found a vinyl teak product from home depot. It had a 10 year commercial warrany and 25 year u.v. rating. Plenty good enough for my old 1983 toon. I had to cut it into the size you see. It came in 6" wide strips if I remember correct. After that I used the same installation methods that the expensive products use. http://www.plasteak.com/marine-teak-dec ... uide/intro
I used the bostic adhesive they recommend but being in the wood floor buisness we had some on hand left over from a concrete glue down job. I did deviate on the grout material. I used a high grade 3m silicone. I made a test pannel and left it outside over the whole winter before I tore into the project. Plenty of snow, ice ,and rain didn't phase it at all! To date it still looks new. It is probably a bit more slick than the factory products but For less than $4 a sq, ft. I'll deal with it. It's awsome for keeping alot of the sand and water from swimmers off of the carpet. Plus I get tons of compliments from people who have never seen teak on a toon !

As far as performance goes with the 115 I can tell you it will get close to 30 mph. on gps. The day the motor blew was the first time I had it in the water with the underskin on it. I was still playing with props to get where I needed to be. 29 mph was the best I saw with out the underskin. The boat only has 19" logs so even with three and strakes it's pushing more water than alot of larger diameter toons. Those last few mph are he hardest to get but with setup changes I'll get there ! Depanding on the state of the motor once it's tore down I will decide if I want to spend the money to fix it. I was planning on a baystar steering system but that might have to wait since I don't need it for a 50 h.p. motor. The boat as it sits with the 50 on it will hit 16.6 mph gps. running a 11.5x8 4 blade prop with just me on the boat. With my avaerage load it drops to 14 mph , but the 4 blade prop pushes it right through rough chop with out hesitation. With the center log set 2" lower than the outter logs it still leans side to side in the turns even with the 50. Not breaking any records but it sure beats sitting home !!!

Nice job! I like the looks of the painted pontoons, diferrent from all the shiny aluminum that everyone has. I could see them coming out in the future with bright anodized pontoon colors.

Great job! If it wouldn't be probing too deeply, can you share the approximate cost for the rebuild and about how many hours you have into it?

good work! I have a 20 ft and the only thing I might suggest would have been to extend the front fence all the way to the front of the boat--I have a fishing model and it's great. Well done.

Lets see, good question. The hours would be hard to figure since it was broken up so much. If I had 8 hours days it would go way faster. As far as price I don't mind sharing at all. I just did a rough figure and with the purchase of the orignal boat with 50 merc. , new hoosier trailer , donor boat, furniture , wood ,hardware , floor coverings , bimini, gps/finder , sound system , 115 merc. ,cmc trim, and a small fortune in aluminum it comes to roughly 9k + or - a few hundred. I would love a new boat but nobody really makes what I want. I want a manitou shp but the styling of an avalon. This is my first boat and with a young family I'm sure I will buy or build another in a few years. A 22' or 24' would be ideal for me !
