My 86 Playcraft Rebuild

#1 Post by redbeard » Tue Feb 12, 2013 2:40 pm

Will here are the pictures for our rebuild 1986 play craft 24 foot we completed the rebuild in 2011. In 2012 we replaced the motor we went from a 50 hp Evinrude to a 88 hp Evinrude at the same time I had to replace the hardtop due to losing it on the highway. For those guys that want to haul their hardtop's down the highway my recommendation would be to use a strap to hold it down I pulled mine for two years with the hardtop down with no problems. I used a pin to hold the uprights to the railing and it worked great, when I went to get a new motor I towed it 300 miles down the road and one of the pivot bolts broke it allowed the top to act like a sail and we went down the road for 30 miles before it ever touched the ground it was too high up in the air for me to see the top in the mirror I can only see the uprights in the mirror the uprights stayed in place. When I got to my destination I got with a weld shop to see what they would charge to fix it they wanted $1500 I said for that I can put two Bimini tops on for that. :2cents
PS I am working on a photobucket album with all the photos

Thanks guys for all the comments there greatly appreciated had a lot of fun rebuilding the boat would do it again. Mrtoler in answer to your question yes I like my double Bimini I do miss my hardtop though, because we are fair skinned we burn easily so we use our tops all the time. They do act like big sails though in the wind but that's okay I can live with that.

WOW i am new here and what do i find the first day , this awesome rebuild.
sir i am hoping that you and i can talk either thru here posting back and forth, pm, or the phone . i have the exact same boat and have many questions i need to have answers to before starting my own project.

i will ask one now if i may . did you have any issues with your toons leaking and the foam being soaked , which required fixing ? ( foam replacement or drying ) this will be the first thing i need to address

I did not have any problems with my Toons until I had some work done to them. I had a bracket put on for my live well pump and I believe it must have a hole there. If I remember correctly the foam inside is closed cell, so it should not soak up water. If you will PM me your phone number I will call you.

I have the same curiosity about the foam. When I first got my toon there was about a gallon of water in the port side pontoon. I have found and fixed the leaks, but have wondered about the state of the foam inside.

Most of the foam used is "closed cell" foam meaning that it doesn't absorb water. When I had a leak, it didn't bother me to run all day and I didn't have to worry about about the log filling completely with water.
