Newbie Queston 1992 Sun Tracker 21 DL

#1 Post by JeffW » Tue Aug 26, 2014 3:16 pm

OK, don't laugh. I have this new to me 1992 Sun Tracker 21 DL with an 1991 or 92 Evinrude 2 stroke on it with what I call a tilt and trim. I had the hydraulic cylinder rebuilt but it works sitting still but under power it doesn't seem to lift the motor therefore doesn't lift the bow any. The guy that rebuilt it said he thought it was just for raising and lower but not trimming the boat out.

What's the truth? How's it suppose to work?

Thanks love the site

Needs three cylinders for trim. if you have one(in the center) it will only tilt the engine up and down. I didn't realize they still made just tilt motors, even in 92. :donno

How do you like the 21 ft
As far as having room for 4 folks to fish off of it? I just started looking and never thought about the tilt and trim thanks for the post . This gives me something else's to look at.

I like it. Seems to have plenty of room for 4 or 5. But I've never had a toon before.

Thanks for the reply on the tilt, but I'm still confused. My 2008 Nitro Z6 just has 1 cylinder on its tilt and trim. :coffee

Well I'm no expert, but my 2009 Honda has three cylinders, and every other motor I have seen and operated had three when it had tilt and trim. Maybe someone that has more knowledge of outboards can clear it up for you. :donno

You may find this manual useful. Johnson Evinrude Service manual 1992-2001 See section 8 for tilt and trim.

That sounds like its a trim too.! If it can "tilt" up when underway and overcome the engine thrust pressure, its trimming. Question is will it stay where you put it?
tilt up and down under way
= trimming

At slow speeds my Merc will tilt while underway. At higher speeds it will not tilt but just a bit. I wonder if a switch is not stuck on your unit. I by far am no expert on this. Did stay at the Holiday Inn a while back if that counts.

I believe that mine must be a tilt only which is fine. If I tilt it up some and take off it will stay their. is it better to leave it down all the way or up 50% or does it matter? I can't tell much difference
