We picked up our Lowe SF214 today. When I was talking to the dealer, he said we don't need a brake controller.....I'm still wondering. I have checked on ford forums, but thought I'd ask people that actually pull their boat. We ended up getting a tandem axle trailer with surge brakes on one axle. I'm currently pulling it with a 2011 Ford Explorer (with towing package, max 5,000 lbs.) He seemed to think I didn't need the controller, but I'm still wondering if we need it. I got the prodigy p3 online, and was trying to figure out if I really need it.
Thoughts?

Re: Brake Controller needed/
If it has surge brakes, a controller is not needed. The surge brakes are completely mechanical activated, and the controller is for brakes that are electronically activated

Re: Brake Controller needed/
Ray Jr is right, surge brakes are just that, they work when you stop the truck and the trailer surges forward initiating the brakes on the trailer.

Re: Brake Controller needed/
Thanks for the info! Means I can send back the brake controller and save a little money for fuel.
