Elecrical Help- Trim Motor

#1 Post by sharky300 » Wed Sep 30, 2015 8:07 am

Hello all- Still trying to get the old boat up and running. Trim motor has been acting up since I bought the boat- working intermittently. I have been trying to trace down the problem but am getting stumped... I will list out what I have done... please advise if you have ANY input...

This is an "add on" unit- on Evinrude 88 SPL the set up goes like this... Two wires from battery into a junction box with 2 relays inside it. 3 wires come from the hand control into the same box. They go into a distribution strip. when then feeds the relays and on out to the motor on the engine. I replaced the wires from the battery, to the junction box- inside the box, power splits off to the two relays. I pulled the relays off and checked them. When I connects the corresponding blades with 12v, I hear the clicking sound. I then checked OHMS across the switch and it opens as it should when the power is supplied. ** first question here, when the relays are "in the system", should I still be able to here the click when activated?? I do not hear anything, but I have checked the wires coming out of the relay, and they have over 12.5v when I press the switch-

Long story short... If I have over 12.5v on the wires that hook into the motor when the switch is pressed, it should be working right??? should I start looking into the actual motor on the engine now??

Thanks -

Jason

Is the relay clicking, that could be the problem, unplug both of them and plug them back in to clean the connections

I hear it clicking when I take it out and power it, but do not here it clicking when I plug it back in. BUT, when I test the line after the relay, I get voltage when I flip the switch... Not sure what a relay is supposed to. But I figured if it were staying closed, I would not get anything after them in the system.

The relay adds ground to the pump on both pump wires. When you press the button the relay clicks and changes one of the wires to positive. when you release it returns to ground. I can draw the schematic for you if you like.
Jason, text me if you need quicker help....I have been a 12 volt tech for 25yrs. your set up is easily diagnosable. rick

No worries!! Glad I was able to help!!! You did all the work, I just directed you. There was a missing ground in the box.
