Not your normal rebuild

#1 Post by outta control » Sat Oct 01, 2016 10:56 am

Im on lake Hartwell in Ga. The corp wont let me have a bigger dock. But they will let tie a boat to my dock. So that is my motivation. More dock/party space. I find me an ole double decker toon with blowup motor and drag it over to dock. Wife thought I was crazy. Blow up motor, seats falling apart, small trees growing on deck and you could fall thru deck in most places. It floats great and was very cheap. So I clean it up. Throw away seats. Take motor and transom off. That was this past spring. Now the fun starts. I borrow a friends trailer. Since it is just me working on I have to get a little creative at times. Back it under a tree. Use a come along to left upper deck off and start the rebuild.

I clean up supports. Attach 2x6 with 1/4 stainless steel carriage bolts. Since using pressure treated I put down to layers of gorilla tape.

Since I like to throw big parties. Need more buoyancy. So I add 2 4 foot by 8 foot dock floats.

Here is pic of floats installed. and closer pic of 2x6s. The floats have attachments cutouts every 2 feet. Pontoon supports every 2 feet. It worked perfect. The floats are attached with 3/8 stainless steel bolts and 1.5 inch fender washers. Locktited every nut plus lock washers.

Since I added 5000 pounds of buoyancy not worried about weight of deck. Here is picture of new deck. 2x6s screwed down with stainless steel deck screws. Once dries I will stain with a semi-colored stain in a light color.

Waiting to maximize deck space I ran the deck to the very front and back of the toons. Used 2x6s as joist and they fit perfectly between top of toons and bottom of boards.

Since the original alum cap sides things wouldn't fit. I used 2x4s to create an edge. Installing new cleats all thru bolted with stainless steel bolts.

Here is top sat back on deck. Still have to make sure in best location and install fencing. Plus add couple more cleats.

That's one way to get around the Corp. rules on dock size.

Allan Jackson did the same thing at Center Hill. His floating dock looks like a 100' riverboat without any propulsion.

Glad yall like it. Yea you gotta do what you gotta do. Would love to have a bigger dock. But this should work out perfect and be pretty cheap. Plus now the wife can see the end result and likes it. Heading up tomorrow to finish it. Then launch it this weekend so can get borrowed trailer back. Will post some more pics and I have a couple of more ideas to give it some character.

I ended up with a little over 6 feet of open deck space in front of the fencing. Mounted 3 cleats across front all thru bolted with backing plates. That short black pole is the bottom half to a patio umbrella.
