Bansil and MamaTurtle create a getaway cruiser

#1 Post by bansil » Thu Mar 08, 2018 5:05 am

Hello all, after 1-1/2 years we finally have a toon in the driveway.

Our biggest hurdle in boat shopping was all the ignorant sellers out there

biggest complaints and issues?

1) Having a 20/24 ft with brand new furniture and a rotten deck with nasty carpet for $7500 to $8500, I would have to strip it down, and put another $750 in it for floor/carpet etc and then it has furniture which we do not want and would miss a year of using it (we are busy)

2)No trailers...they all said you can buy a trailer for a couple hundred dollars...reality? NO you can't, you're buddy bubba may have one for you

3) Everyone had full wrap around furniture that was in "good shape" for $6500+ which we didn't want

4) absolute basket cases, it is a good project...mmm...rotten deck, rotten furniture and no engine for wayyy to much money

5) lot's of boats with no engines for $4500...why in the heck would I spend that and then either find a used engine for $3500 or a new one for $8000

So cruising craigslist I found a pontoon that had been listed for a long time...mmm...wonder why?

Turns out he couldn't sell it because it had no furniture! And people would freak out when they priced a full set of furniture and most folks are not handy with doing stuff like that
Yes, exactly what we wanted

It had been winterized so we went and looked at it and said we would keep in touch, which we did every couple weeks

We went to "put eyes on it" he had replaced the deck with 50 year synthetic deck board, put railing back on and bought a console and seat from PONTOONSTUFF actually and called it good

We wanted a cruising, fishing and camping 'Toon this fit our bill

The decking added about 300 pounds to the boat, but with everything else off it still sits exactly like it did when he got it (you can still see waterline from PO)

Also having no furniture lets both our fathers to have easy wheel chair and walker access, two thumbs up

So after that wall of text, LOL

Sounds like a good blue print. take a real close look at that decking though. you may want to reinforce it if you'll be in any rough water what so ever. In theory that stuff sounds like a great idea for long term exposure, but can it take the flexing and wracking that it will encounter. The only place I've seen it is on a tiny pond where they never encountered rough water. I would love to find a rebuild that is all ready stripped. One more consideration with the weight is that top, together your'e probably starting with 500lbs extra, depending on the size of the toons the capacity may be around 800lbs.

Thanks
Actually if you look close you can see the extra bracing from the rear up to 3/4 of the front, which is what I would of done to allow the front to flex when hitting waves

Okay so IMG tags don't work on this forum? does this mean I have to upload to a computer and then resize and then load onto the forum here?

backing into driveway

park for some work to be done

Okay since I can not seem to imbed pictures with IMG tags, how in the world do I put pictures in so that the description matches the pictures???

This is the only board I am on that seems to have an issue? Thanks

Nice! the forum needs an upgrade in software (contacting Mike on that today). Loading from computer works fine for me.

Just a quick look see at what we have

The fuel tank is clean and spotless in side (I atually pulled pickup out to check screen/sock, it looked nice and clean)

extra parts thrown in cubby on port side rear, need to make a few covers and shelves for the whole thing so when parked wifey can lay down in sun if she wants

Console will be redone, face plate is two pc and everything is crooked and dont need hole for a stereo and gages are hidden by the steering wheel

under the seat is some stuff, it will be emptied and turned into a livewell to save deck space

and side console for controls will be redone in fiberglass probably next fall, we will see how it goes

Boat came with a custom storage box wrapped picnic table vinyl and a shelf that left the bottom 14 inches raised so only 1/2 the box was usable???

Good thing it had 6 brand new life vest still with tags on and a two bank battery charger (no idea if it works, I download a manual and trouble shooting manual)

It was carried and then thrown off the Toon...the box, not the charger

(emoticons don't work? is this my settings or the site?)

Minor suggestion would be to paint that diamond plate on the console. The sun glare will be annoying from time to time.

You have a good project there with "good bones" and seems to be in great shape where it counts.

That crap is gonna go away...far...far away

it is actually 2 pc and no support in the middle, very ghetto and everything is crooked

ETA to add I need to make several fiberglass pods to add to the console, pontoon boats apparently the only electronics they need are a radio lol

How is your live well plumbed?

outside the perimeter of the seat?

and is pump mounted under deck?

How do you fill it? I noticed a bilge pump wont "suck" up 3 feet, so my plan was to drop it into lake with a flexible 3/4 inch hose to fill it and exchange water if need be

Thanks for the warm welcome, this will be built in stages because we will be using it as we build

Had a few hours yesterday so i drove to lowes.....3hrs later i was home with a box of fittings, add a couple pumps and some pvc

I striped the seat, and used a conduit hole kit to make perfect sized holes for the thru hull fittings

Drilled a rain pipe to add air to water as well as a couple drains/fills down low and an overflow about 12 inches from the bottom

No pictures of the rest of pipping, i need a couple tees and then can show over all concept
