Question on my restoration

#1 Post by Earl » Sun Mar 03, 2019 3:45 pm

After looking over many of restorations in this forum I decided to jump right in and restore my 1992 Suntracker 19 ft. pontoon. I have all the seats out and took off all the rails. I built an engine stand and this weekend was able to take out the Johnson 60HP outboard. I was careful to label all the wires at the engine and again near the gauges........but many of the gauges are broken and old....so this is my question. Electrical wiring is not my strong suite.......if I buy a new control console and gauges....is re-wiring the entire boat fairly easy? When I look at that bundle of wires between the tach, the ignition, the volt meter and the radio-all cramped in under the old console...my head feels as if it will explode. At the engine there was a large round wiring harness that I unplugged....I really have no ides what each individual wire is for.

I like to try to do things myself...but I am thinking of taking all my new parts (lights, gauges, radio) mounting them, then running all the wires to the console and then asking my "boat guy" to connect them. If you tell me that wiring them together is straightforward or they provide good instructions...I may try it. Your thoughts would be appreciated. I probably should have asked this prior to the tear down.

You can buy universal wiring harnesses, or you might even be able to get one designed specifically for your boat from Suntracker.
