Need DIY railing ideas

#1 Post by Joseph Elliott » Thu Apr 25, 2019 1:30 pm

Well it’s taken me a few years to build my boat but am finally feeling close. Next step is to build a railing. There is no reasonably priced standard pontoon boat square tubing sources near me so I need to make a railing myself. If any of you guys and gals have done the same what materials did you use and any pictures for me? I am currently contemplating using 1” steel water pipe. Thought about electrical conduit but figured that would probably be too flimsy.

I would think 1" steel pipe would be awfully heavy!

I'm sure there are several online vendors that could ship you aluminum square tubing.

Thanks Steve, I was hoping for a more economical option though. Tubing is expensive up here, it would be $1000 in material alone plus paying for a welder.

Thanks lucky, I will try that and see what I can find.

Check this page (link below) some are cheap; I have no idea what shipping would be but that’s just from some of Florida

I know this is an older post but I was curious what you came up with.

Mgarvie, I ended up using 1 1/4" steel angle iron. It works but is heavy.

I've been considering PVC pipes and netting.

This some railing I built for my porch, but it would work on anything all materials available at Home Depot. Very inexpensive. See picture. Made from screen cage aluminum and EMT conduit.

That may be what I need! Framing for a pool enclosure and railing netting like you would get on a sail boat. It would keep the dogs in ,the Asian carp out, and I can see my fishing line and dogs through it. Think I found my winter project.
