Clean Pontoons

#1 Post by coach hugg » Sun Apr 28, 2019 12:28 pm

Hello everyone, I am new to the forum and new to pontoon boat restorations. I purchased a 24' pontoon boat over the winter and am now in the process of rebuilding it. I purchased some Toon Brite to clean the pontoons and it left a white finish to it. I read that I need to polish them so I bought a cheap buffer from Wallyworld and tried to bring back a shine. I am also using star bright aluminum polish. I don't know if the buffer is crap or if I am doing something wrong, but I am not making any progress on restoring any kind of shine. Any and all advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

I'm sure there are many ways to get the shine on the pontoons.

I use Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish. It's available at any auto parts store. The trick is to work a VERY small area at a time. It takes me at least 4 hours per side to do my 20 footers. You can use paint thinner to remove the black residue from polishing if you want to save some time. Believe me....it's a task I dread every spring, but the results are worth it.
