sun tracker party barge repair

#1 Post by cruiser1911 » Tue Jul 23, 2019 2:32 pm

Im new to the site and new to boat ownership. so still in the fun stages of it. I picked up a n older party barge that has been sitting for a few years and was totally rotted out. I stripped off the deck, console, and 3 different sets of wiring on this thing and am starting a rebuild. I tried using the search but wasn't having much luck. I picked up marine grade plywood and stainless screws. I was going to order vinyl flooring and that was vetoed by the boss she wants carpet. so I am going with carpet. now for waterproofing the plywood, I was thinking about using a layer of cheap household vinyl under the carpet and painting the back side of the plywood with elastomeric roof paint. I dont want to mess it fiberglass and resin right now. would I get 10 years out of that deck? it will be sitting on a the trailer most of the time. I will try to get pictures soon

I think painting would be better than the possible sweating from the vinyl :donno

I dont know, I usually overthink everything and take to long. I guess if it doesn't last I can always redo it. anyway here is some pics I got super helpers.
has anyone used one of those premade consoles with an exterior mount engine control that seems like a way easier way than a metalworker trying to build something out of wood

I think you should try and convince the boss that it would be better to go with vinyl instead of carpet. My son has carpet on his boat and between people climbing on board out of the lake after swimming, and people on the muddy bank climbing on board, his carpet looks like hell. He is able to bring it back to life but it takes a heck of a lot of scrubbing to get all that dirt and grime out of the carpet. After seeing that, when I bought my boat I went with vinyl. I am so happy I did... we fish on our toon all the time so we're always dropping bait, fish, what have you.. two or three times a year I pull into one of those do it yourself car washes and power wash the deck.. seems to do a pretty good job. Now if you don't have kids and it's just going to be adults getting on board and going for leisurely cruises, your carpet should stay in pretty good shape.. but if you got kids, like to fish etc etc., you may be happier with vinyl. Not trying to tell you what to do.. just giving you a little insight... by the way, my son has told me he wishes he had vinyl. just something to think about.

I agree you'd be better off not to use carpet, but if you have to, I recommend you DON'T use household vinyl underneath the carpet and DON'T try to paint the underside. You're more likely to trap moisture inside the layers of plywood than you are to keep moisture out of it. Marine plywood is meant to be used in wet conditions and is on the vast majority of pontoon boats made in the last 50 years. It will be fine and should last a long time.

I got this going for fathers day this year meant a lot to my dad, because it was his old boat, lots of memories. its rough but usable and the family is enjoying it. so far not minding boat ownership. I'm wondering about building a sun deck with slide on it for the kids. the boat only has a 2100 lbs capacity, so a few hundred pounds of aluminum makes a difference. yea or nay? would it need a third toon? i think im going to be changing out the wood furniture to real stuff over the next year but Im putting together a plan so I know where the money goes before it goes. there is 25 nephews and nieces and there is the tenancy to over load it as it is now. the other choice I guess is build a 32 footer or so with bigger toons. I can't bring myself to buy a new toon they are more than I paid for my house.
I haven't worked a lot with aluminum, so I think some tubing rails would get my feet wet in aluminum welding

That wooden furniture has got to be adding an awful lot to the overall weight compared to typical pontoon furniture!

When we rebuilt ours on a budget,we used pressure treated plywood and 2 x 4s, 2 x 2s for seat backs and bases, console, foam cushions and marine vinyl coverings, but only up to the console, plastic lawn chairs in front, saves weight, stack out of the way, easy to put where ever you want. We have plenty of storage under seats for 3 anchors/ropes, 4 life preservers, that kind of stuff, 2 batteries and battery switches, ropes, umbrellas for extra shade. Under console we store 4 more life preservers and tools, flares, first aid kit. So I guess what I am trying to say is plan it out, mock it up in cardboard if possible, see how it looks. If I can get some pictures I will post.

Hope these give you a little idea of what we did. Our roof is on posts so we can slide it up and down, down to trailer and pinned in place. that is why the seat back in one picture is laying down otherwise it hooks onto the rear rail top. rear seat is about 6 foot wide, table is about 3 ft long by 2 foot wide, front bench is 3 foot wide, we have a changing room/bathroom over rear toon, that's why seat is not width of boat.
