Good morning everyone. I have been following along here for a while and you all have been a big help with ideas and advice on remodels so I decided to get into my own. I'm about to replace all the decking on a 1998 Savannah Gold. I ordered the full decking and flooring replacement kit from pontoonstuff.com. The issue I have is the tops of my framing crossmembers are not solid, they are an open channel. The tape pontoonstuff.com sent is not wide enough to bridge that gap. I reached out to them and they were kind enough to send out another roll for free so I could double it up. Upon thinking that through I am not sure that is the solution to my problem as it doesn't really seal anything where the joint is, just where the wood meets the framing. Is that all I truly need, or do I need to find something wide enough to span the whole framing crossmember?

Also in relation to the above, the old sheets have a caulking on each side of each framing crossmember on the underside of where the board sits. If I were to caulk the entire length of the board/framing does that just eliminate my need up above for the tape? Regardless I like the idea of the caulking and would like to do it for the new sheets. Does anyone have any idea what type of caulk or sealant that would be. It looks like a caulk that I have used as part of shower basin sealant that they use for airplanes.


Any ideas or thoughts on the above would help me to move forward in finishing this boat. Thanks everyone.

so was the old floor screwed/bolted down? or was it just held in place by the caulk?

Yes, the old wood is bolted down.

I've been here since 08 and never seen that! Not sure how I'd do that. let me look around maybe I can find something.

I actually ended up buying some window/door flashing. 4" wide and similar material to the tape pontoonstuff.com sends out. Going to try that out. Still haven't decided what I am going to do about the caulk, and if it is truly necessary or not. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes they are all like that. I would assume you are referring to uni-strut.

I started getting into it last night. Ended up putting the skinny tape from pnotoonstuff.com on each side of the "C" as both sides are sticky. I bought a roll of window/door flashing (4" wide) and put that sticky side up on the tape so it covers the entire "C". Score the paper where plywood is pull it off and bolt down the wood. I'll let everyone know in 20 years how it held up...or 2 if it fails.

What do you all suggest for filling in my drilled out bolt holes?

We used good wood putty for the initial filling, then covered all the top seams and spots with fiberglass resin (epoxy). Short work time (so don't make much at one time) and probably over kill, but hoping it will eliminate any 2 year failure. Sand smooth and put flooring on that thing.
