Redecking with C channel deck trim advice please

#1 Post by Kytoon » Wed May 06, 2020 5:42 am

Getting close to finishing tear down on 1994 Godfrey Sylvan fishing toon, and pulling off decking trim. I notice the trim has a C channel. And it's a tight fit (wood measure 3/4 with a tape measure) (hope I don't destroy it taking off, the wood is likely swelled up). So looking for advice. I don't want to go thinner on plywood figure this old boat needs all the strength it can get.

Anyone have experience with this? Will 20 oz textured carpet likely fit on top of new 3/4 marine grade cca plywood? Any tricks on reinstalling the trim channel. I'd rather not replace deck trim (though realize that's an option).

Thanks for any insight.

Man that boat has a weird design! Hopefully new plywood will slide in there....

I replaced the carpet with vinyl on my former Bennington. The side trim looked like that. I remember struggling to get it back on over the new vinyl, but don't remember what I did to get it on other than liberal use of a rubber hammer. Sorry. But I did finish the job. Don't think I used any lubricant, but maybe I did pry the to legs apart just a little bit.

Thanks for that info.

I plunged in and ordered 20 oz carpet.

Wifey suggested cutting off the bottom channel,

I'll try the hammer method first and might try some kind of lubricant.

Follow up:
After new deck (no carpet) the wood fit easily into c channel.

With 20 oz textured carpet using large c clamps to help position was able to pound deck trim back on with 3-4 lb plastic hammer. A little puckering at the edge of carpet though not noticeable and railings will be on top of it.
