2000 Johnson 40 won't fire

#1 Post by guy48065 » Mon May 14, 2018 8:14 am

Getting the 'toon ready for the season & everything looks fine after winter storage. Except now the motor cranks & cranks but won't fire.

The fuel priming bulb is firm. There's fuel visible in the filter. I hear the "choke" click when I press in the key--but I suspect the choke solenoid might be bad.

I finally put a shot of ether in one cylinder and it started immediately & purred just fine. Next day I tried again... Same thing--crank crank crank crank forever. Finally started after 15 minutes of trying.

How do I troubleshoot this problem?

In the picture, is the small tube on the top of the carbs the "enrichment" lines?

Does yours have a start circuit injector solenoid?
My does, basically when ball is pumped it fills the solenoid, and when key is turned it injects a shot of fuel into chamber (like the shot of ether did for you)

If it has been siting I have to turn the bleed screw for solenoid as I pump ball; only takes a second and we are good to go

ETA mine is a suzuki tho'

No bleed screw on the solenoid in this Johnson--just a manual bypass. Turning the bypass also didn't get the motor to start.

There's a Schrader valve in the center of the bypass that's meant as a port for injecting fogging oil. That might serve as a bleed (?) but I've never heard of it being used for that, or needing any attention.

Anyways I thought after finally getting it running on Saturday that I would be golden on Sunday. Nope.

Hmmm...I seem to have asked the wrong question.

Lemme try a different question: What's your favorite rub to use when smoking a pork butt?

Just to close this out...Yes the small hose connected to the top of the carb is the primer hose. It was getting no gas. I replaced the primer solenoid. Before putting it all back together I pumped up the bulb & jumpered the primer solenoid wire to the battery feed. The priming hose pissed gas 6 feet and continued until the pressure was gone from the bulb!

Now it fires right up.
