I just don't like knots tied to anchor ropes, dock lines, throw lines...etc on my boats. No real reason. They just bug the heck out of me. Its a compulsive pet peeve of mine I guess...anyhow I like to splice the rope. It also looks cool.
Something like a 50% loss of strength if you knot a rope instead of splice. Its also cheaper to splice one to the length you need instead of buying it that way.
Here is a guide on how to splice I have used off and on...once you do it, its pretty easy. They also offer a pdf download of the guide.

Re: Rope Splicing
We made them for use in electrical work all the time, as we ware out a line over time heavy lifting and dragging them, but we never had a eye loop break on us, the line would go first, so we always made sure we had someone who knew how to splice

Re: Rope Splicing
We where supposed to learn how to splice in the navy when I was in...but the "a-gangers" as we called them (maintenance people on the sub) actually did the splices for the dock lines and such.

Re: Rope Splicing
When I was in the Boy Scouts I received a Merit badge for knots and splicing rope and lines.
I am lucky if I remember two of the knots (square knot and bowling) that I can tie and if I attempted to splice rope I would most likely unravel the entire line.
Thanks for the link. I think I will try again to splice a line. It makes latching to the dock a lot easier.
