GregF wrote:Ed you probably know this but I pack my fridge and freezer with bottles of water a few days before. It is a good thermal mass to hold the temperature, the frozen bottles can be used in your coolers and when it is warm, it is still water you can drink.
I always keep cases of water around here in the summer. I think I have about 12 right now. When Walgreens or the grocery store puts it on sale I stock up. Costco/Sams is reasonable too.

I just bought a generator but we did fine up until now without one. I do have a propane fridge, a bunch of inverters, a golf cart with 6 deep cycle batteries and the redneck power plant to charge them.

A buddy of mine gave me 2 pressure washers, one needed a carb (Honda) which I fixed and the other a pump (not worth the expense to fix). Coincidentally that was my plan for that one. I have a GM one wire alternator destined for that. I've always kept frozen water bottles in my freezer to use on the boat. The ice lasts alot longer than bagged ice. At Canal Day or on our fishing trips, I use them as drinking water as they melt and food/drinks in the coolers are used up. My Honda EU2000i will power my fridge, LCD TV, Computers and a few lights fine.

He's an old veteran of coastal living, is very prepared and talking all of the right precautions. The house he will be riding the storm out in is pretty high and well built.

I told him to keep his head down still though.
Tell him to look at pictures of Hugo hitting Charleston, SC.
Many of those houses were well built and high -- but long gone when the storm surge came in.

Living on a barrier island is great until you have a storm and then you really have to think about getting the hell out. Big chunks of those islands can just disappear, popping up somewhere else. It is just sand. I am about 5 miles from the gulf and I still would not be shocked if I saw a foot of water in my living room some day.

That is good. I just talked to my brother in-law who lives in Brick, NJ and they lost power a couple hours ago.

I live about 35 miles north of NYC. The winds are just starting to pick up. It is supposed to hit us the hardest between 1am and 9am. My Marina began lowering all the Bimini tops of all the boats and started pulling out the most vulnerable boats yesterday. Today I checked my dock lines and mooring cover. (also my insurance). We will see what happens.

Small world Greg. The power went out pretty early there. Maybe a tree fell on some lines. :donno

Lost our power all of 3 minutes all night..so far this hasn't been any more damaging to my property than a typical thunderstorm. The storm that wrecked my boat was much worse than this.

My brother up in Pa. has a huge tree down out front of his house and a few outback though.

sounds like you guys are weathering the storm pretty well so far... hang in there... Last I saw on the news it was still a catagory 1 hurricane.... that's a break since they were predicting it might ramp up to a cat 4 ot 5.... as long as nobody gets hurt - that's the main thing..

Lost power about an hour ago. I was kind of hoping we would go a little longer before losing power. The news is saying that the strongest winds have not hit yet.
