A new member posted in welcome what kind of equipment is necessary and what is good to have on your toon?

Necessary equipment
At least one anchor and plenty of rope
Life Jackets for each passenger
Throwable device
Fire extinguisher
First aid kit
Sun Screen
Sunburn lotion
Boat hook
Tow rope for emergency's
If you raft plenty of line and good boat fenders
necessary but good to have

Extra towels
cheap poncho's
flashlight
trillion watt spotlight for assholes who get to close at night
Air horn as installed horns are near useless
Bug spray
When we boated at night a lot we had some cheap blankets on board for damp chilly nights
Some clothes pins for hanging towels to dry and use a shade when sun is low.

Make sure the lifejackets fit whoever they're intended for. And ensure the passengers know where they are and how to use them.

Children 12 and under have to wear their lifejackets when the boat is underway. (underway is not moored, anchored or aground) Again, make sure they fit properly. (Some states may have different age requirements, but most states, including the Coast Guard, require them for 12 and under)

If boating on the Great Lakes or coastal waters, proper Visual Distress Signals.

Plenty of water and other beverages to prevent dehydration. Alcoholic beverages do not hydrate and actually lead to dehydration. Also alcohol affects equilibrium and orientation, meaning that someone under water may not be able to tell up from down. They also accelerate hypothermia in cold weather or water.

Boat operator must stay SOBER.

Radio or Cell phone, in case of emergency.

Basic hand tools. I also carry a 12 volt jump pack for emergencies.

File a float plan listing where you launch, where you're going and when you expect to be back, so people can come looking for you if you don't show up back home. Include the names and ages of whoever is with you. Leave it with a trusted friend, NOT local LE or USCG. Tell them to call rescue if you don't return. Make sure to cancel it when you do get back.

Proper navigation lights and make sure they work. Even if not planning to be out after sunset, you may be held up and need them.

Know your fuel and fuel range. Use the rule of thirds: allot 1/3 tank to get there, 1/3 to get back and 1/3 for unforeseen circumstances.

UV rated sunglasses. The sun can destroy eyesight over time and may lead to macular degeneration.

We actually keep all cleaning supplies and garbage bags on board. A person is more likley to clean and take care of their boat if everything they need to do it is right there.

I would add a bucket large enough to hold the anchor to keep the floor clean. I know I always clean the achor before bringing it on board but drunken first mates sometimes not so much. :lol3

We keep a small container that holds essentials like bottle openers, cards, dice, retro CDs, Dog poop bags...anything and everything like that. Napkins...plates, forks, spoons, knives.

Are the bikinis required? I always thought that was optional.

Lots of em!
I also store some extra cash in the boat, for "just in case" situations. Never know when ya might loose your wallet or leave it at home and need to buy gas or some EzFenders!

If you are in the lop-sided state of Ill a noy, then make sure you have a paddle on board. Any boat in Illinois waters, under 26' must carry a paddle. Yep!, you got a 25 foot Carver with twins, then you better have a paddle on board. "So sayth the idiots." Ever try to paddle a toon?

I also live in Willinois. Incredible morons run this state. Wait I retract that, it's an insult to morons, to be lumped in with the likes of IL politicians.

BoatCop, in Missouri only children 7 & younger are required to wear a PFD when in a boat (not counting when on a PWC where everyone has to have one on).
My own personal rule is to at least 12 and then at night I want anyone under 21 to have one on.
We also require any child on or near our dock under 11 or 12 and not under the supervision of an adult on the dock to have a life jacket on.
Wee ones don't get off our deck, which is about 40' from the waters edge, without a life jacket on. Don't want to put one on, no problem--stay inside.

I boat on the Mississippi and Illinois rivers, and so I generally take the following in addition to everything else listed above:
3 anchors
Fixed mount VHF with Loudhailer
Hand held VHF
GPS with AIS (never know when a 15 stack barge is coming round the bend at night.
Flares
25' mooring ropes at all four corners
Several additional lines
no less than 4 fenders
Asprin, ibuprofin, Tylenol, tums
Baking soda (for those bee stings)
a bin of coozies
a bin of sunglasses
and a Blender :drink4

I have reviewed this post. I do have one rule on my boat. Women are only permitted to wear one piece suits. Tops or bottoms thier choice :-) :thumbsup
