Lighting, lighting, lighting.

#1 Post by 68dodgeramman » Sun Jan 05, 2014 9:11 am

One good thing about all the cold weather up here this winter, and more predicted, is it gives me plenty of time to think about the boat! So I'm thinking that when she gets liberated from storage this spring of installing some accessory lighting. Firstly l want to get the LED lights at the bottom of the seats. I ordered them when I ordered the boat, but I had the worst salesman in the industry, so it doesn't have them, lol. But that's a whole 'nother story! I also want to install the under deck LEDs and transom lights. So I'm lookin' for any info on where to get, what to get and any tips on installation. Thanks for any help on my Spring "project"! And remember; more snow now, means more water in the Spring, lol.

I am kind of lighting crazy. Boat Christmas lights.... but I was in O'reilys auto parts a few days ago and found all sorts of led accent lighting that you can place anywhere on your boat. Didn't have time to look real good (wife in tow) you know how that goes. Check them out.

A buddy of mine did a lot of LED's and when it was all said and done, he said that he was going to get the dimmer kit for all his internal lighting due to it being too bright to use while under way at night. The stuff at sold at the auto parts stores can be very bright.

I am thinking of doing some under boat lights for fun but on our lake, the water cops tend to frown on them being on while under way and in many states it is illegal (and cant blame them either - hard to see the nav lights).

Mitch -
I sure do know how that is, lol. And I will check out O'Rielly's, thanks.

Herb -
What kind of discount do we get at pontoonstuff.com?

Mrtoler -
I saw those and I think they're great! But I don't know if I wanna spend that much, but who knows! Lol.

I'm sure it's illegal to show any lights other than navigation lights while underway. I would only use the under deck and transom lights while at the dock or at anchor. Which I'm not sure about the legality about using them at anchor. But I don't believe our local sheriff's department would be too strict about that. After all its not a 1,000 foot ore carrier, lol. I do like the idea of the dimmer switch though, I think that'd just be nice to have.

If you can manipulate the colors on each side, you could always just make the left side side red and the right side green. Takes nav lights to a whole other level.

I have heard the complaint about interior lighting being too bright for night time running. When PontoonStuff designed the Under Seat Lighting, the decision was made to use half of the amount of LEDs that standard Under Deck Light kits use to reduce night blindness. While I personally don't have any "seat time" with the Under Seat Lights, I can tell you they look incredible and put out a very nice, soft glow.

jediger - Haaaa! That would be something! Unfortunately the coast guard says they need to be viewable 112.5° from right ahead to 22.5° abaft the beam. So those LEDs would be out of the question, lol.

ToonGuy -
The over brightness thing is a big concern. I mean what's the sense of installing them if you can't use them while underway, right? But those PontoonStuff lights look great! Thanks for the lead.

Does anybody here have an Xcursion with the courtesy floor lighting? I was just wondering how many separate LEDs are mounted all around the seats because I don't think I can mount the ones from PontoonStuff on my seats. There's no overhang.

My unit has courtesy lights under the seats and around the deck so I just use them.

But I bought some green 5050 LED light strips from ebay for $15 each and installed them underneath my pontoon deck edge for night fishing. It took three sets so I have about $50 in them after buying three sets and a switch to control them. I hook them to my trolling motor batteries. They use too much juice over time to hook to your starter battery.

I don't use them when running but they are great when the pontoon is anchored.
