We are headed up to Lake George, NY again this year and I have a question for you to ward off any aggravation and tension that comes about when we set anchor in a beautiful spot close to the rocky shore and 10 minutes later, we are drifting close as our anchor is giving way... We have 2 anchors that came with the boat. They look like this... The river anchor held better than the other. My family wants me to get a better anchor... If our boat drifts again, I think I will be swimming back to the dock. Any suggestions please? I was just going to go with another river anchor, maybe a little heavier than the one we have... I guess it is about 10 - 15 lbs... What do you think? In case you don't know, Lake George is a very big  spring fed lake with the bottom consisting of mostly lime stone (I believe...). Rocks are what the anchor has to grab... Thanks for your help and thoughts.

Sincerely,
Rich
The only anchor I've found that will hold a pontoon without worry is a box anchor. I've been on all kinds of bottoms with winds to 30kts and 4 foot seas and it still holds. It's also made so that if the tide or wind changes directions, it flops over and catches again. I will never use another anchor again.(and no I dont work for the company)

How does the box anchor work with submerged timber? We have a lot of stumps, logs, brush in some areas and I hate losing anchors. Lost a Richter last year when it just would not come loose from any direction I pulled. The Richter did not hold well in sand though and the box looks good for that. We have lots of sandy bottom areas as well.

I HAD two box anchors---I have only one now cause the other got snagged and i couldn't for the life of me get it un snagged--
The digger will come up if snagged because of the release system--

I've got a box anchor that I made, and it works pretty well. I almost lost it last month cause it snagged under a log. My new grapple style ones are all but snag proof. If they get hung you just pull the opposite direction and the plastic wire tie will break and you just pull the anchor up. If they would fold up, they would be perfect.

I love my box anchor! No chain needed....in fact I have it attached to a anchor buddy which is actualky a bungee type rope. We like the toon gently moving when coved out provided you have room. It will hold our 25 foot tritoon and a ski boat attached to us. The anchor holds awesome and the boat will slowly extend and retract with wind and waves...

Hello All.
Just an update... The two "river anchors" are holding like champs here in Lake George! And the weather has not been too nice. Came back in today with 3' white caps breaking over the bow. Little scarey but I wouldn't want to be on any other boat... Safe boating.

Sincerely,
Rich

I use a Fortress FX-11 on my 24' Bennington and it sticks like glue. Really great anchor, incredibly light and stows easily.

After loosing a Richter to tree stumps on vacation several years ago, we got a Digger Anchor and so far so good.

This year we got a new pontoon that is now 24 ft so upon suggestions from this forum, we also bought a box anchor as the last time we anchored in 20 mph winds the digger had a hard time holding. Overtons had 20% off and free shipping over the 4th. But, on vacation we will only use the digger!!! It hasn't been lost to the stumps yet.

Thanks all.

Light wind maybe 10mph and a muddy bottom will move our toon all around.

Part of the issue people have with anchors,is that they pull up where they want to stop and drop it straight off the side.
Throw it out towards the windward direction 12-15 ft from the boat. Let the angle of the line and wieght of the boat drag that anchor across the bottom on its side a couple of feet and give it a chance to set. I also use the Anchor Buddy . Love it!!! I also anchor off the stern as well.
I set the boat as close to 90 degress to the wind as possible. Set the bow anchor right quick and let the stern drift around with the breeze until the boat is 40 degrees off of the wind and then set the stern line. Boat will drift to about 45-55 degrees off of the wind and the anchors will stay set .Again, the bungee buddy is great for both lines.

Based on all the great recommendations on this site and others, I ordered a small box anchor from Overtons yesterday. They offer $15 discount thru today, June 12, with code July14, free shipping and will match lowest advertised price. I found it priced much lower at BoaterPlus.com and Overton's matched the price. I feel like I got a deal.

I use the 25lb Richter Anchor. It holds good, but will slip if you do not let out enough line with it. Mine has a 4ft 5/16" chain attached to it.
The only problem I have had with it is my first mate(wife) says it is very heavy to pull back up. I will probably get a box anchor or digger anchor if something happens to the one I have.
