prop gaurd
Has anyone used a prop guard on a pontoon? I've looked at the information on their.website. of course they are going to sing the glory on their own product.....ky lake has a rocky bottom. I wondering if this would be worth the investment or is it just another shamwow?

Re: prop gaurd
Once you go propguard, you never go back, safety is the best part, saved me a prop and saved a 11 foot gator from many cuts one night, when we both turned a corner at speed and couldn't miss each other.
It adds a lot to slow speed handling, making it easier to dock and trailer, and when you get into low water you can tilt the engine up, it acts as a jet drive, I got through areas with my bottom dragging like that, fishing.
On the Mercury 90 I didn't lose a mph at top end, but you might lose one mph, this is the second one I bought, I was going to use the old one on the newer engine, but got a deal on a new one, so bought it in a heart beat

not wanting to rain on anyone's parade. but i don't know if it will do what your wanting.it will protect you and others (including critters) from the prop. but i doubt that it will withstand any kind of substantial impact with rocks.
if it ain't broke-it ain't ours

Well as a rule I try to stay out of rocks and grounding my prop. My grand kids like to get on and off the boat using the stern ladder. I don't want them to cut their leg on the prop

Re: prop gaurd
6x6 busted his on a rock, but it saved the prop, he was on Loto, far away from the dock, so it could have been a bad time, middle of the week, would have been hard to get a tow, he was able to get home no problem, so he bought another one

Re: prop gaurd
Was looking on one of the retailers websites and they said something about "Propguard Standard units not recommended for speeds over 30mph". Couldn't find a similar reference on Propguard's website, however, and they have some data showing propguards on engines doing up into the 40s. Anyone know anything else about this. Would seem silly to spend $175 on a propguard for a 250hp motor and then not be able to use it above 30mph.

Re: prop gaurd
They were supposed to make them for bigger engines, but maybe it didn't work out

Re: prop gaurd
That's what I don't understand. The quote comes from a link to the propguard designed for engines from 100-300 hp. And on propguards website they show test data for a 230hp volvo penta with a propguard going 38mph. http://www.propguard.net/test.htmlHandymanHerb wrote:They were supposed to make them for bigger engines, but maybe it didn't work out
Looks like most of the performance advantages show up in the low rpms which is fine, but if the whole product is going to malfunction at higher speeds that's not a good thing either.

Re: prop gaurd
Just seems logical that if you are going over a certain speed, pretty much nothing is going to save that prop if you hit a rock. Just like bumpers on a car can protect the body of the vehicle at slow speeds, but at higher speeds, everything is going to get crunched.
