Anchor suggestions

Need help on the type of anchor to use on our new pontoon. We have used a river anchor for the past 20 years with our Four Winns 210 Horizon but it is not holding our new pontoon. We are located in Lake Cumberland in Kentucky. We ended up tieing off this weekend but don't want to always do that, much easier to throw the anchor out.

Any help would be appreciated.

At the recommendation of many on this forum, we have "digger" and box anchors. The digger is our main anchor, box is our backup in case we're ever caught in big winds or storm and want insurance. The digger is light, easy to place, effortless to pull up, and has always held. we just got the box anchor, haven't tried it out yet but it is heavier, bigger. Here's a pic of the "digger."

I use a #13 fluke anchor, 10' of 5/16" chain as a rode and 3/8" line. During the fireworks last weekend, I had another 20+ foot pontoon rafted up and it held in 10-15 mph winds. We were in a muddy bottom area and it took some good pulling to get it loose.

I have also heard good tings about the box and digger anchors.

Used a fluke at one time but have switched to a box anchors and have been very pleased. Actually two box anchors, one in front and one in the back. Guy on another forum made some fold up box anchors and they work well.

I have a 21' pontoon and I bought a small box anchor. It's the best decision I could have made. That's one anchor that I can throw over the side and never worry about again- and since so much time is spent at anchor it really reduces my stress out there.

I use a Fortress FX-11 on my 24' tritoon. We go out in the Gulf with it, so we're often dealing with some strong currents. This anchor digs in tighter than a tick. Very lightweight.

I use a 20 lb Navy anchor from Roloff Forge in WI, it holds our tritoon incredibly well. I also have a chene anchor I use in mucky areas where I dont' want to have to clean the Navy anchor. The Chene anchor holds unbelievable. You have to motor over it to get it back, and it needs less rode than the flukes. Check it out.

Another vote for the Box anchor. It's great for a deeper lake.

Thanks for all the input. We have purchased the Box anchor but haven't tried it out yet. Will let you know how it does.

Just joined yesterday and 3 post about the anchorshock... Hummm me thinks your bias for some reason eh?
