Need tire recommendation's

#1 Post by Crawgator » Fri Jul 25, 2014 8:18 am

Hello all,

I have a 24' toon. It's time for new tires. Tandem axle trailer with 20.5x10 tires. Current brand is DURO. With the influx of cheap tires I want to get a good brand. I have read here that Kenda tires are good. Current tires are load range C. I was thinking of bumping up to load range E for a bit of a buffer.

Suggestions?

Going up on load range is going to be better for sure, brand I can't help you with, I'm to far away to go see what they are, but some of the smart guys will jump in soon

I run Maxxis M8008 ST radial tires on mine, they are pricey, but I tow a lot and over fairly long distances (400 mile roundtrip) regularly. We had them on our RV and ran with zero issues.

I would like the Maxxis brand but they do not make a 10" tire. :(

The trailer world, both marine and recreational vehicles, is having a terrible time with sub-par Chinese trailer tires suddenly blowing. Reading RV forums, someone everyday is experiencing blowouts--even on brand new trailers. The big selling Goodyear Marathon tires are one of the really bad tires, despite the brand name.

After doing much reading online, the Kumho 857 (14") and the Maxxis M8008's are the only ST tires I'd put on any trailer.

Have you considered going up to 13" tires? If so, you can get Maxxis' ST185-80-13 tires for $85 at DiscountTireDirect.com. Most new pontoon/tritoon boats seem to be equipped with 13's.

If you choose to stay with your 10" tires, look for a Kenda Loadstar K399 in the 10" size online. They're available, and may be the closest thing to decent quality.

My new fifth wheel RV trailer's due in next week. I'm replacing the ST Chinese Will Pop tires with Bridgestone R250's on day one. I hate to spend that $1K, but a blowout can cause $2K-$3K in damage to the siding, fenders and the underside.

13" isn't an option without modifying the trailer. the 10" tires are snug under the fenders now. I'd have to remove and fabricate brackets to remount the fenders.

Thanks for the info on the Kenda's. I'll check them out!

Carlisle makes a 20.5x10 e rated tire. it is hard to beat Carlisle when it comes to trailer tires.
