2006 75 Optimax elpto flushing question.

I went to wall mart today and bought a dual port flusher ( ear muffs). My problem is that the water inlet ports on the lower unit are very close to the front of motor, you can't really slide the muffs on cause as soon as you start to put them on your covering them. My muffs hand all the way off the motor.
So my question is is there a specific kind of ears to use with this opti? I did try to put on from prop side and slide all the way back to the inlets but with a pontoon prop and makes it hard to do. Just seems there should be a easier way.
