VHF Radio for river running.

#1 Post by RBickfordjr » Fri Jun 12, 2009 7:07 pm

Hi all,

I am new here and have a new 24 ft SunTracker with a 135 mercury pushing it. We are using it on the Tennessee and have two Locks that are with in a days ride from where we launch.

What I would like to know is if anyone has any advice on a inexpensive hand held VHF radio. We also have bad weather from time to time and it would be nice to know in advance so I get get the big lighting rod off the water.

Thanks for any help. :usa

I think mine is a "cobra" hand held . I am very satisfyed with it. It has 3 watt settings, make sure you go to the lowest setting when you're close to the lock and call from channel 14.

We live in the Huntsville area and put in at the Decatur launch. So I am not sure that we are very close. But if we are then it would be great to have some company.
