How much increase in speed between a 60 and a 90?

#1 Post by mjlyn » Mon Jul 06, 2009 2:30 pm

I have a Lowe 20ft pontoon with a Mecury 60 4 stroke. Right now my top speed by GPS with the top down and driver only is 16-17mph.

Id like more power to but now much more speed will i get with say a 90 or 115. Or is there somewhere that i can look up tests showing speed changes with different engines?

Thanks in advance for any feedback. :usa

I get the same as Heatman & Lakerunner 22-24 depending on conditions.
22' AquaPatio, 90 4S Yammy.
So with a 20' and 90 HP you should get a few more MPH.

We got a new toon a month ago. When we tried the 60 and compared it to a 90, it was amazing. We got the 90 and do not regret it. The dealer told me (and I believe him) they had tested the boat performance to make sure it was good.
Last Wednesday, I did our first speed test with it. Full tank and 3 adults, the gps showed 27.2 mph. The prop is an 18 x 13P aluminum. We were happy with the results, needless to say.
For cruising, I like to throttle back to 4000 rpm. We are getting about 19 on the gps at these settings. i believe it is much easier on the engine at cruise settings.
Our first toon was an 18 Godfrey and a 25 4 strk. This boat was a firewall it and wait to get there boat. I estimate 12-13 mph downwind. So this is quite a performance upgrade over what we were used to operating.
:2cents is to get what hp you can afford since you can throttle back and go easy on the engine.

Good luck.

Cruising speed is what I was hoping for when I added my third log. I cruise at 4400 RPM and get 17-18 depending on load and conditions. It'll get you there, make a good breeze and folks in the boat can still talk a bit.

90 HP will should dramatically increase the usability of your boat as well as add to your top speed.

I was finally able to get a GPS on my boat the other day and I was suprised! I thought that I was going around 15 - 16 with a 40hp merc on my 24 footer. WRONG! I was only getting 11-12. But, there were 4 of us on board with some other things also like tables, grills, coolers ect.

What I do know about the 90 vs. 115 is that mercury uses the same exact block for both motors. The 115 uses a bit more fuel and you only get 1-2 mph more speed out of the 115 than the 90. I am buying a new motor for my boat at the end of the year, and I would definatley get the 90 over the 115 for the gas and $ difference, and forget about the 2 mph defference. :2cents :givebeer
