Does your boat sit level when not underway?

#1 Post by Jayjoans » Wed Jun 07, 2017 10:07 am

Again, our first trip out in our new to us tritoon yesterday.

I was surprised at how low the rear sits when floating. The floor is not at all level, not annoyingly so, but noticeably. Just 2 relatively normal sized adults on board. Is there anything that can be done about this other than putting fat guests up front?

My guess is maybe it's due to a 150 on the back of only a 22'?

All of the two and three toon boats I've seen with bigger engines sit rear low in the water. Its just the norm.

Mine has the 3/4th length center tube, and it does sit a little low at a rest. It's fine when running however.

I look at as a shorter climb up the rear ladder onto the extended rear deck.

I think they all sit low in the rear.
You could add more weight up front to offset the rear, like anchors and things like that.

I have a 1988 24 ft with a 75 on the back. While on it I don't notice is but it certainly sits low in the back some. It is just weight distribution big heavy motor in back and lite up front is all. I noticed a bunch last week while out and most newer boats were more apparent than mine.

And then there is the 80 lb. battery or even two of them. As I'm well aware of since I've just reinstalled mine for the season.

I find my Harris rides stern low at dock. I don't know the boat design reason for this, unless its to get the boarding ladder lower into the water, or place the bow higher when taking off.

Forward of my engine/transom is an open area, about 50 gallons of space, that takes on water. This water drains through a scupper as the boat gets underway. That's about 400 pounds lost and the boat rides more level underway.

You must have the self-bailing cockpit option...just kidding.

As mentioned, that is the nature of the beast (heavy motor, usually a battery, and several hundred pounds of fuel).

To compensate, I keep a person and the main ice chest full of beer at the front of the boat. When my rearward passengers need a beer, I slow down to idle and all the person in charge of the ice chest has to do is place the beer on the floor and it rolls perfectly to the passengers in the back.

Pontoons are like a woman with a big ass. They set low in the rear.

I don't believe I've ever owned a boat of any sort that had an engine that sat level in the water when stationary.
