Transom saver question

#1 Post by Spara6995 » Wed Jun 28, 2017 7:27 am

:?: I just got a new Sweetwater 2286C Tritoon and I am needing to get a transom saver. This is not the first boat I had but it is the first Tritoon. I don't know if I should get the angle one or the straight shaft, any suggestions?

I would say whatever fits your trailer better. My pontoon takes a straight one. Best pic I could find right now.

Thanks for your response. How do you have it secured to the trailer. I really don't like drilling holes into the trailer but I guess I will have to.

mine has a hitch pin that attaches to mount on trailer. They make once that brace on trailer then you strap as well.

Mine has a bracket on the end of it that sits on the trailer brace and I run a bungee cord around it. So I guess I have a strap on. Not sure that's something I should be proud of or not.

Here's one bullet I've dodged.. Yamaha recommends trailering in the upright running position unless there is inadequate road clearance to do so. On both the boats I've owned there has been plenty of clearance so why make a problem out of a issue that doesn't exist.

From Yamaha,

Do not use the tilt support lever or knob
when trailering the boat. The outboard mo-
tor could shake loose from the tilt support
and fall. If the motor cannot be trailered in
the normal running position, use an addi-
tional support device to secure it in the tilt
position.

The outboard motor should be trailered and
stored in the normal running position. If there
is insufficient road clearance in this position,
then trailer the outboard motor in the tilt posi-
tion using a motor support device such as a
transom saver bar. Consult your Yamaha
dealer for further details.

Thanks for all the help. I had the one that was from Amazon on my first boat and it worked well but it attached to the runner on the trailer. This trailer don't have the runner. I am going to my dealer tomorrow to get some toys for the boat and I will talk to him. Some people says that a strap on is not a bad idea! (wink, wink)

Exactly what Bamby said.. normal TRITOON trailers keep the boat sitting pretty high off the road surface, there is probably at least 2 Ft. of clearance from my skeg to the ground, why tilt the engine while trailering? No need.

yep, what bamby said... read the same thing in my yamaha manual... as long as you have plenty of road clearance you should be fine. In the past i have heard some say without the transom saver you are putting undue stress on the transom, but from what little I've read, there is more stress on the transom when the boat is in the water and you're underway... I don't know if that's true, but that's what I read.

heres one reason to tilt the motor and use the support

the previous owner of my boat trailered it without supporting the lower unit, the bouncing on the transom did not hurt the transom but it did cause stress cracks where the mounts met the tube, i spent much time and effort repairing them.

so you are allowing a 300 lb plus motor just bounce up and down on the tubes, the metal fatigue will set in.

by using the motor support you eliminate a lot of stress,

i have been using a support under my motors for 35 plus years, never seen a supported motor get damaged, but i have seen an unsupported motor damage a boat or two.

these are the welds i had to use to repair my tubes from unsupported motor:
