1973 Kayot question

#1 Post by Retired OG » Wed Jul 05, 2017 7:02 am

Hi all...first post here. Does anybody here know if my old 1973 Kayot 24 ft. has sealed chambers?

I think I read somewhere that the early pontoons didn't have walls between sections....It looks to have 2 ten foot & 1 four ft. sections. I haven't had it in the water yet, because it was in a state of meltdown. It had been sitting for the past seven years in the same spot outside and unprotected except for the area the hard top covered.

My Harris has two chambers and a nose cone (not sure if it is part of the front chamber but it is likely)

I have drain holes for both chambers.

Do you have a single drain plug or multiple?

Other than that I am not sure how to check. I guess tapping on the side may give you some indication. Maybe even evidence of an interior weld (like mine has)

Actually my rear section is about 8 ft. until the weld and the center is about 10 ft. and the nose about 5 to 6. I don't have any drain tubes/holes but have an access hole that is capped in the top rear on each pontoon. I've only had it a couple of months and haven't gotten it to the water yet, because the deck needed to be replaced and the motor tended to, because from what I understand, it had been sitting for about the last 7 years...(uncovered)
I've managed to get the new deck on and re carpeted...last night, I got the engine started after rebuilding the water pump...it has about 150 in each cylinder. What I think surprised me most of all was that the hydro/electric shift works....not too shabby for a motor that's 50 years old...it still needs tuned, fuel lines replaced, and a new ignition switch, but at least it seems to be a solid foundation to build on.

Nice. I'm sure you will make a nice boat out of it. Post some pics.

As for the toons I'm not sure. that access hole is probably a place to pressure test it. Which I would do before putting it on the water (or building much more.)

It is probably fine but if you need to repair it, that will be easier now as opposed to when its all back together. Especially if you have to raise or flip it.

if you change the LU oil its a special oil, standard 90 weight will fry the electric clutch, if you use the right oil it will last many years
If it aint broke your not having enough fun

Affirmative about the lower unit lube....I believe it's called type C...I have no way of knowing what is currently in it, so before I run it any more, I need to drain it and refill....the very rear of the frames backbone on each pontoon is cracked where it's welded on the pontoons and I think one of the previous owners tried to use the propane/aluminum welding rods to repair it...other than that, they look in pretty good shape...If these pontoons are a single chamber, I'll have to think seriously about flipping it.

Yeah I think I'd be pressure testing it myself.

Mt old Kayot had stress cracks where he frame was welded to the toons on all four corners, about a dozen places. Had them welded by a good aluminum welder and had no more problems. Mine had pipe caps on each toon so it was easy to put in a shraeder valve for pressure testing...3psi MAX! Water could past the bulkheads in each toon so I could drain it all out the back.
