New pontoon price

#1 Post by tshaw21 » Tue Jul 25, 2017 5:23 am

Good morning all, new member here. We just sold our ski boat and we are looking to buy a pontoon. We have found a 2017 Sylvan 8520 Tri Toon with Merc 115, strakes, underskin, tow bar, sea grass flooring, and playpen cover... I am sure I am missing some of the smaller details here but the price before taxes is $27,014. Is this a decent price for this pontoon. I can not find anything on the web stating MSRP or pricing of something similar. Thanks so much!

Yeah they seem pretty elusive with their MSRP. I tried to look on their website. Which is a little confusing and hard to work at first. Or maybe I haven't had enough coffee yet.

Hopefully someone here has a source for pricing for you. I just find it odd they don't make mention of MSRP on their website.

My thoughts exactly... I find it maddening that I can't at least get an idea of the costs.... I just want to make sure I am getting an average price, it doesn't have to be out of this world....

That looks almost too good to be true
check the upgrade for the 150 and go for it
my dealer is sold out of pontoons, i was in there a couple weeks ago and he only had two in stock
he had a field full in the beginning of the season

Thanks for the reply... Unfortunately it is already rigged with the 115 and being sold with it. That was actually the first thing I asked was about the upgrade since the Sylvan PR20 (Tri Toon) package allows up to a 200HP.... All else being as is glad to hear you think it is a good deal. I just needed some affirmation to pull the trigger....

the 115 and the 150 do use the same controls but you would need hyd steering for the 150.
That sounds like a killer price for a tritoon based on what i see in this area.

You better try the boat before you buy the boat.
With a 115 you will be disappointed with the speed (25-28) mph.
So a good price on a boat that you don't enjoy is not a good deal.
I personally had a 115 on my tritoon and it cost me $11,000 to install a 150hp motor and now I enjoy my boat.

Hmmm, I was really hoping to get into the low 30's with the 20' and 115 Merc.... This is always my dilemma, but at some point you got to stop the budget bleeding... The cheapest Tri with a 150 I could find was $35,000... Not sure if it is worth that to me.

they do make a 115 pro XS that is a little more high performance than the regular 115, see if that is available
Do take it for a ride before you buy it, i bought a pontoon with a 90 on it and was not happy with the speed

People like there speed....

My 24 ft 1988 does 19 mph with a 75 hp. I'm happy with that. I guess I am the oddity. I don't see the need. I have enough speed to get back to the dock if a storm moves in. Enough to pull my kids on a tube I would think. (haven't had the chance yet)

Guess I just don't get the need for speed thing...at least not on the water ;)

Yep, me too. I've out grown the need for speed. All we do now is cruise to the cove, drop anchor, cook on the BBQ and chill out with a few cold ones. Pontoons are not Speed Boats, their Pleasure Boats, but hey, that's just me.

Enjoy your Toon.

That boat will easily be in the 30's GPS, Mine is an 18' tri-toon with a Mercury 115 ct and I can hit 40gps with 2 adults, 42 with just me. And there were 2 other guys on here with the same boat, both over 40, I'd be surprised if you couldn't get to 35. Even with 1400lbs of flesh on board I can get to 28 consistently. That's a good price price as well.

You should be able to do the low 30's with that setup. I have a four foot longer Sylvan with a 115 Merc, two RPT tubes, underskin, etc and top out at 28. I easily cruise at 23MPH with a full load. I paid $29,900 in the dead of winter for mine which I thought was a good deal. That's a great price for yours...I would pull the trigger.

Like you said, at some point you need to stick to your budget. Do I miss going 35MPH once in a great while when I am by myself and the lake is calm? You bet...but no way is that worth $10K.

JLester.. I don't think your the oddity, but you and I are certainly in the minority. I have a 75 on my 20 foot Bennington and I am happy as punch with it. On a smooth lake she'll get 24 mph or so..Having said that it should be known we don't have any kids at home any more so it's almost always just me and the wife and we pretty much use our toon for fishing... It will pull a tube okay, which is great for my grand kids. I know that most of the guys on this forum always say get the most hp your boat can handle. In my case my boat is only rated for 75 so I'm maxed out. I'm not knocking extra horsepower.. won't lie to you when I see a storm moving in from the west it would be nice to be able to get back to the launch a little quicker.. but honestly that has happened so rarely to us in the 7 years we've owned the boat, the extra thousands it would take for a bigger motor just isn't worth the extra cost to me personally... but if money is no object, strap a 200 on the back and have a blast... oh, one nice thing about a smaller motor, my yamaha 75 sips gas... usually 2 to 3 tanks will get me thru the season which is from about april or may thru october.... oh, back to the op.... tshaw21, from the sound of it, that sounds like a very reasonable price for that set up... but as someone else suggested, take her out for a test drive before you buy it..
