Are you measuring your speed via GPS or your speedometer? Speedos are notoriously wrong.

My 22ft toon with 25" logs and a 90 hp Yamaha with just me and 25 gals fuel in the spring will get 25 mph at 5900 rpm's. Now after being in water all the time, best I get, same condition, 22 mph at 5600 RPM's. Dirty toons, hot weather less speed. Your in the ball park with your speed. Would have to spend lot's of bucks to pick up a few mph in my opinion. :2cents

Re: starcraft 20ft pontoon LACK OF SPEED

#21 Post by family pontoon » Sun Aug 02, 2009 11:54 pm

I have a 2009 Merc 90 four stroke that gave me a whopping 16 MPH via GPS over the weekend. The load was with 2 guys about 170 pounds each and 2 women about 120 each. 1/4 tank of gas and WOT is at 6200

I think I want to burn my boat Please someone pull a rabbit out of a hat and tell me what is wrong. Im not looking for a speed boat but I would figure I should get more than 16 MPH

Thanks

Is your boat new as well? If it is an old boat with a new motor could you have water in your toons? You should be getting more than 16 for sure.

Im also being told the front of the boat sits low like its taking a nose dive.
Post some pictures of it in the water. Could the prop be gravitating? :donno

PLEASE HELP starcraft 20ft pontoon lack of speed

#25 Post by family pontoon » Sat Aug 14, 2010 9:44 am

I'm about to burn my 20' Starcraft pontoon boat. Heres what I have and hope someone can shed some light on it.

2005 206 ELITE with a NEW Merc 90 Four Stroke. I have contacted merc and several local boat stores and everyone is telling me to use the same prop which I have installed (dont remember dia and pitch). Boat full or with 2 aboard, can get the thing above 15MPH and no way will it get up on plane. The boat is really pushing the water and on several occations, the front end has dove into the water like a submarine when I have pulled back on the throttle. Water pours onto the front deck and people panic.

I have checked the tubes for water and they are empty and hold pressure. I have raised the motor to the highest mounting point from the lowest and seemed to make it worse.

Guys and Gals, your my last option before I post pictures on ebay and craigs list for Boat for Sale minus motor

My 2010 Starcraft 22 foot with a Yamaha 90 HP 4 stroke will do about 27 mph GPS.

Family Poontoon, I had a 24ft Starcraft with 120 h.p. Johnson. This boat was a dog it did just like yours, nosedived under like a WWII german Uboat. I had to have the motor rebuilt 3 different times due to melting pistons. I have owned a Starcraft ski boat and it also had a lot of problems only with handling. It was 14ft deep V with deep sides and rated for a 60h.p. which it had. After I wore out the 60 I put a 85h.p. Johnson on it and that transformed that boat in a great riding and handling boat. I think that Starcraft is junk and this is just my opnion.

I agree Starcraft is junk but for now Im stuck with it. I just looked and the prop is a 14 x10

JUST A THOUGHT!! The Merc I have is a short shaft, does every pontoon run short shaft? Im I crazy to think I should have installed a long shaft motor???
