Went out to start the motor on the muffs. Started right up and idled about 10 minutes no issue. Turned on the stereo to check it out and it was playing fine. About 2 or 3 minutes all of a sudden I hear a high pitch continuous whistle. Turn off stereo and no change. Turn off motor and it goes away. Turn key to on but not start and it comes back. I think it sounds like it is around the console but cannot pin point the location. It is very loud and shrill. Any thoughts?

Sounds like an overheat warning

You may be right lake runner. I left it turned off about 30 minutes to get the chickens and went back turned the key on and no sound.
Now thats its dark and fixing to storm I will wait to crank the motor and see if it does it again.

We needed to add water to hot tub last night, insert hose and turn on....then we went to let chickens out for a couple hours, give the goats and dogs a few treats.....oops....1/2 hr later we had a hose now siphoning out 6 inches of water, all because of...chickens

When you had it running on the muffs, did you have water coming out the pee hole on the back of the motor?

I've heard some people say that using muffs will cause water to come out the pee hole even if the boat isn't running due to the water pressure. But on my 90hp 4-stroke Yamaha, that isn't the case. Just had it on the muffs last weekend to do the engine and gear oil changes. When I turned off the motor, but water still on and muffs still on intake, no water was coming from the pee hole. But with the motor running, I had a good solid stream coming out of the pee hole.

In the ten years we have had the boat, I've never had water from the pee hole when on muffs. At the lake, lots of pee hole water. And I think it's called a tattle-tail. Never overheated on muffs but have never run more than about 10 minutes but at fast idle plenty in neutral. Yammi F225.

I have always had water coming out the pee hole when the motor is running. Unless a critter has put a plug in it while it was sitting. Actually last night when it first started there was no water coming out so I turned it off and ran a wire in the pee hole. Fired it back up and had a strong flow out the hole. It just sat there idling for about 10 minutes when the alarm sounded. I am thinking after doing more research that it may be a bad sensor

I'd check to make sure that the outboards water pump impeller is actually pumping to capacity.

My understanding is (no personal experience) that at idle speed if the impeller isn't pumping to capacity, one of the first tell-tales is that the overheat warning comes on.

Speed up a bit and the added pressure/water volume cools enough that it turns off the alarm.

As the impeller gets worse, it has a hard time keeping the engine cool even when moving above idle.

So I'd have to ask..... How long since you changed out the impeller on your motor?

Every spring i spend the $20 or so and replace impeller, then the used one goes in a baggy and stored on boat...just in case i need to replace it on the water

Well the impeller was replaced mid last season when we swapped this motor on. Only had the boat out 3 times after that due to medical issues. One thing I noticed last night when I started it up was the pee stream was not solid. It would have a little spurt about ever 3 to 4 seconds. Any thoughts on that appreciated.

I like the weed eater string idea. Should be better than the paper clip! I think I will steal it!

I had a spool and pushed it into the hole as far as it would go, ( ) which was all the way up and back down to the impeller tube I think, And cut it there. That way I know it will clear the whole path. Dobbers get into everything at my place.

Eat the Fuckers.

When in doubt, check your engine manual for what causes the warning beeps. My Mercury sounded an alarm beep for overheating, but it turned out to be a wiring harness.
