Garmin Striker 4 Performance Question

#1 Post by Steve7 » Wed May 30, 2018 8:08 am

I just installed one. Like all aspects for my needs, but the depth stalls or freezes around 20 mph. I have to slow way down to get it reading again. My old Lowrance on another boat worked way past that speed. Is this normal for the Striker 4?

Seems normal for just about any finder on a pontoon. It’s VERY hard to find a decent setting on the back of a round hull with a rounded transition and probably a keel guard to boot churning up air bubbles in front of the transducer. Even my big hummingbird sidescan HD transducer has trouble holding bottom lock above 20mph.

Consider adding http://johnnyraysports.com/newsJR3.html or mocking up something similar. You'll note their test boat was a pontoon as well. I have two on my boat (one on each toon) and they made a world of difference on keeping bottom at speed.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I do have a factory 90 degree mounting platform on the two side pontoon rears for these attachments. I have also tried adjusting the transducer. Maybe this is the the best it can do. Just thought I’d check. Thanks again!

The trick is to get it a few more inches away from the turbulence of the pontoon and into some cleaner water. Hence the extension brackets I posted above. Best of luck with it.
