2017 Sylvan 8522 Entertainer Tritoon Merc 150 prop help

#1 Post by mccanj » Fri Jul 20, 2018 12:05 pm

Hoping you can help me out with props.

I have a 2017 Sylvan mirage 8522 entertainer tritoon model with a 2017 Merc 150 4 stroke. This pontoon has 6 lifting strakes and the third pontoon being full length.

The boat came with a 15x13p 3 blade currently reaching 5200 rpm at 32 mph.

When I bought the boat they claimed over and over that it was properly setup for the boat telling me it will be max rpm 5800 at 38 mph. I knew something was wrong when i looked at the prop out of the water and noticed that each fin has what i call cavitation burn. I have lowered one hole.

I have tried;

Enertia 14.25x18p 3 blade resulting in 33mph at 4800rpm. This one made the motor sluggish, too heavy.

Quicksilver 4 blade 14x16p at 5200rpm at 32mph.

Before trying these props a local marine tech looked at the boat and told me to lower the motor one hole. Which I am now on the third hole down. Now that I have lowered it, I have decreased by 100rpms and am not able to see the cavitation plate at WOT which is now only 5100, And with all props I will blow out before I reach max trim which is 3/4 down with Merc’s smart trim since lowering.

I am not looking for a race boat, just simply looking to get the boat to perform as it should with what the dealer claims at 38mph. The Merc 150 so far is not performing to what I had expected.

Since I am new to this and it seems like propping correctly is like gambling, which I suck at also, I am asking for help. Thanks!!

Do you have the PR 20 or PR 25 package? They may have given you the wrong motor for the transom. I think my neighbors friend has a 15X15 or 15X17 prop on the same boat with the same motor.

It's his friends, but he claims 42 on GPS. so you also have the 25" shaft I would imagine? it does sound like a height problem. Some of these dealers really suck, I have a merc 115 with a 13.5 by 17 black max and mine runs perfect, I can't believe they would give you that size 1st.

I thought maybe height. That’s when I lowered it among texting prop testing, sound that it decreased my rpm’s with more drag. So today I raised it back up a hole.

I've heard of a few people over the last few years, since they started selling the PR package that ordered the PR 25 and got the PR 20 with a 25 shaft. Or vice versa, the dealers kept saying that wasn't the case but finally got it right. This probably isn't the case but I'd check for sure, Especially since it doesn't sound like they know what size prop to put on it, Or how to set the height. :donno

An Enertia 15 pitch should do very well on that motor.

What was the 15 by 13 you used at the beginning?

So my neighbors friend has a 15X15 stainless steel prop, He hits 5800 RPM's @ 42 MPH alone, with his 2 young kids and wife he is at 5700 RPM's @ 37 MPH. One other question, Are you at high altitude where you boat?

Thanks Ron!
I am not high altitude at all.

I have heard great things about the mercury Enertia, or the quicksilver q3. A few people have recommended I try the 15x15. The only problem is trying to find somewhere that has one!

Can you post pics so we can confirm that the outboard is the correct height? Use a straight edge to follow the bottom of your center toon to the height of the cav plate. Make sure photo is straight on to get an accurate feel of the height from the pics. Basically you need to confirm that the outboard height is correct before wasting time and money with props.

I can when I get her out of the water. I did however confirm with a straight edge that the cav plate was level with bottom, the marine tech I hauled it to advised me to lower it one more hole so it was 1 inch lower than the bottom, when I tried that I lost rpm.
