First, I have no pics and I am sorry about that. I know its bad internet etiquette (if there is such a thing, lol) to not have pics related to getting advice, but hopefully I can provide less fun info to base an opinion on.

My pontoon boat is a 22' tri-toon from Fire and Marine, with a 24' center pontoon. Fire and Marine puts lifting strakes on the center pontoon and inside side pontoons. Same diameter on all 3, 25 inch. The boat is probably average weight compared to other manufactures 22 ft boats.

With the 2013 Yamaha F115 I can get to 32 mph with just me and perfect conditions. When pulling a slalom skier and 4 adults on board I can get to 27 mph. I am using a stainless cupped prop 14" dia x 14" pitch. I also have a 15" pitch but is too big when loaded.

My goal as far as water sports is to get the boat to 40 mph with just me and 36 mph when pulling a slalom skier and 4 adults.

Can the Evinrude 150hp G1 accomplish this? Do you think a 2-stroke will be less effected by the pull of the slalom skier?

The transom is rated for 225hp. Even if I had the money for a 225, there is the kids/relative issue. My boat is buoyed at a family cottage. My kids and relatives will be using it. While I would love to have a 50 mph tri-toon, for safety reasons I am thinking it might be better to have just enough hp to properly slalom ski with a bunch of people on board. I can tell my son to keep it under 40 mph, but when he's with his friends that ain't happening.

So my guess is a new G1 150 will be pretty perfect, but I am still worried that it might not cut it.

40-41 mph solo is what I’d expect and 34-35 with 4 people pulling a skier. Going to a 200 on the same engine block will only bump those up another 3-4mph, and not give any more “pop” for pulling skiers up. The G1 would definitely pop up a skier better than a Yamaha 150 but I would think swapping controls and such would make it a more expensive swap, seen some really good deals on Mechanical shift 150 Yamaha. The Big block Suzuki and Mercury 150’s have a ton of torque down low also.

My high strung 140 manages 38 solo and will get over 30 pulling a 4 person tube with 3-4 adults on the toon.

Have you recently seen good deals on the Yamaha 150? I was under the impression that both Yamaha and Mercury are back ordered (6 months +) on anything 150 and up. I have found some stock out their, but I need to move fast.

My F115 pulls slalom skier up ok, but when a good slalom skier cuts hard, you can notice the boat slow down a bit. I thought a 2-stroke would handle this better, or even the low gear ratio Suzuki. Or just get a 4-stroke where we are skiing in the peak torque of the outboard, I guess.

The easy answer would be to get over my concern about other people driving my boat fast and buy the highest hp I can afford, lol.

I am not worried about changing brands because there is a good chance the buyer will want to buy the controls also.

Those are some pretty good numbers for your Suzuki 140 considering that it uses the same block as the Suzuki 115. I wonder if our pontoon boats like the low gear ratio's of the suzuki's. I have looked into suzuki, but the dealer support is limited in my area. The closest dealer is not that far away, but there are no dealer on the lake that I am buoyed.

The Suzuki 115/140 had the largest displacement block until the new Mercury 115 came out a few years ago. The old Mercury/Yamaha 1.7l 115’s were pretty anemic. Mine is a trailer queen and I have a good Suzuki dealer near by and one on the lake I frequent so that’s the way I went. Never needed them but it’s a good piece of mind. The only Yamaha’s that seem to be in short demand up in Minnesota are a few of the SHO versions. As far as HP goes, whether you get into trouble at 35mph or 50mph with a boat, it’s gunna hurt!

The only 2 stroke to go with us the G2.
If you have a late model Yamaha, life would go so much easier swapping/trading for a F150 or better yet a F200. The 200 would need Seastar power steering assist which is very pricey to add on, however.
The F150 is conservative on horsepower and is a whole lot more powerful vs. any 115 horsepower motor.

I get 40 mph out of my F150 @ 6000 rpms with a Reliance 15 pitch propeller--24' Bennington.

I currently have a Uflex ProTech hydraulic system that they say will handle up to 300hp. Is there a reason I would need to add power assist for an F200 other than the obvious heavier steering effort?

How is the speed of your Benny with the F150 when its heavily loaded? 40mph is pretty impressive for a 24', is it a tri-toon?

I wanted to get a G2 for the internal hydraulic steering, but the internet has scared me away from that. The G1's seem to be trouble free.

I have been thinking about this repower for a while, probably to long, my first thought was an analog Yamaha F175.

Even the Yamaha dealers in my area don't seem to want to take a trade in for another Yamaha. They will do it but admit that it won't be a fair price. I can see why an Evinrude dealer wouldn't. All the dealers say my F115 will sell quick on craigslist, I guess I will find out in September.

As as Evinrude owner I personally stay with Yahmaha. Evinrude service is a pain for owner service. Unless things have changed water pump replacement is a pain, plus spark plugs are expensive and have to be indexed. Oil is 50 a gallon also.

First off if your're paying 50 dollars for oil you getting ripped off.

I get XD100 shipped to my door for 40 a gallon. Amsoil makes the same stuff and can be had for low 30's shipped to your door.

My G2 150 will smoke a Yamaha 150 out the hole and midrange punch. I have had 2 150 Yamaha's and been on many other boats with 150 Yamaha's.

I also can turn a much bigger prop. 15 to 16 inch diameter is no problem. The Yamaha wont even think about doing that.

So with these heavy Tritoons and lower cruising speeds the bigger diameter has its advantages.

My boat will run 43 with me and a full load of fuel and gear. Even with 3 people I still see 42.

The MPG's stay at 3.3 to 3.5 from 24 MPH to 42 MPH. A 4 stroke drops the faster you go. The G2 seems to stay about the same.

The digital control and power steering are nice.

The Merc 150 is probably the best bang for the buck 150 out there. 3.0 Liter block and gets better MPG's than the Yamaha does.

The Yamaha is tried and true technology. But its behind the other motors now.

But if you could find a low hours used 150 it would probably be the cheapest option and use your existing controls.

A new 150 Yamaha will probably be more than a new Merc even with using your existing controls.

Not sure where you are located, but maybe in Ohio since your boat was manufactured in Springfield, OH. I had a friend who just bought a new Yamaha 150 from a dealer in north central Ohio. He said they had a lot of them in their building waiting to be sold. Not sure what he paid for the engine, but they charged $90 labor to install and test the 150 on his pontoon using the controls that were connected to his Yamaha 90 that he had removed. He called them on a Monday to see what they had available, delivered the boat Tuesday evening and picked it up on Thursday. If you want the dealer's name, send me a PM and I will provide it.

Thanks for all the replies on this thread and other threads on this forum and other forums about this repower I have been contemplating the past 2 years. :lol3

I finally made a decision and ordered a Mercury V-6 200hp from a local Mercury dealer. It is scheduled to come in next Spring. For being where I am I think I got a good deal. I am paying MSRP, which is $17175, and he is throwing in mechanical controls and rigging for free. Local Yamaha quotes are Yamaha F150, $14500, a F175, $16,500, a F200, $18,300 for just the motor. The Evinrude G2 200hp (small block) was going to be $19500 rigged. The G2 was actually a decent deal considering the onboard steering IF there wasn't so many horror stories on them breaking. A 10 year warranty does not help when there are no evinrude dealers on my lake. I never got around to getting a price on a 2018 Evinrude 150 G1.

Willyt: Those prices for outboard motors around you are nothing short of outrageous. A dealer close by sells the Mercury 150 4S for well under $11k. Yamaha F150s should be around $12.5k, and the F200s just over $15k.

I know, not much I can do, other than shipping from jacosmarine. With the shortage, the logistics of doing that is working against me. Believe me I have thought long and hard on how to get a better deal. Not everyone can live next to a high volume dealer.

I would say what he is paying is actually pretty decent. Because those are just motor prices. Add rigging and control that's easily 2 grand or more.

Ed's Marine has the 200 for 14,200. That's motor only. So add a few grand to that and your easily over 16 grand.

FYI, Ed's Marine is local to me, and just be aware they have a horrible reputation. Yes, they are known for extremely low prices, but if anything goes wrong or you need any help from them, don't expect it. I know this would just be an online sale without a lot of support expected, but just be aware of the potential pitfalls.
