Upgrading from 115hp Merc to 150hp Merc logistics

#1 Post by Kramfam » Sat Aug 18, 2018 1:14 pm

Time to bite the bullet and upgrade my 2015 115HP Merc 4 stroke to a 150HP. I am having a problem finding anyone who will take my current motor in on trade for the 150HP. Not that there is anything wrong with it the motor they just want to either install a new motor or try and sell me a new boat...they are not interested in trade ins. The current motor has less than 100 hours on it and doesn't even have as much as a nick on the prop or skeg.

Jaco's marine in TN will take it in on a trade but of course they have to see it and I'm in WI. Has anyone tried shipping a motor cross the country or have any other ideas as to how I can pull an upgrade off? Have you bought the new motor first and then tried selling the old motor on line? I don't have a trailer either.

Thanks

Hi, out of curiosity, what kind of price are they quoting you for a 150hp? I have a 2018 Merc 150hp with 25 hours on it and think I'm going to upgrade to a 200hp or a 225hp. Maybe I could sell you mine and find a 200-225.

Think Bass Pro was advertising a new 150 for a little over 10K without rigging.

I am in a similar situation. I want to go from a 2013 Yamaha 115 to a 150+ hp (any make). Everybody in my area, even yamaha dealers do not want to bother selling a used motor even though they claim it will sell quick on craigslist. My plan is to try to sell on craigslist in a couple weeks while the boat is still in the water, and then upgrade. At least in my area there are no newer outboards on craigslist, all old high hours, so it may be an easy sell.

I'm getting quotes as low as $10500 for just the motor to as high as $19k for a complete changeout to a Yamaha. I would be interested in purchasing your 150 but the logistics of that is no better than what I have now. The boat is rated for up to a 175HP.

Check out Don's Marine in Lodi, WI. I upgraded to a 150 earlier this year and they offered me some $$ on trade, but it wasn't what I wanted. Ended up selling it on craigslist.

This is a real world situation that any decent boat dealer should go thru often. Many boaters, especially bass boat dealers, have customers that upgrade for more power. Happens every day.

Jacos is 40 minutes from me. They dyno any trade ins to make sure the engine is at 100% condition. It is good business to do it. The Merc 150 4s should be close to $11k or slightly less outright without hookups. I would think Yamaha F150s are around $12,500 on a direct dealer.purchase. (Most Yamaha motors are sold thru manufacturers at fleet price discounts.)

If a dealer is unwilling to trade up in horsepower at a fair price, I would go elsewhere for my next purchase.
