Parker,
I'm guessing 3,000+ lbs. typically I fish with 4 people. live well full of tasty treats.. really no issues moving the vessel well, and I'm using it in 80% salt water. (Boca grande pass, Matlacha, Sebastian and cedar key fl)
My toon I purchased used, it came rigged already with 1 separate battery (under the helm), plug and wiring for the trolling motor was already installed. So that was the main reason I went with the 12v. Just mounted it with a quick release bracket added the plug and done.

So far I am very satisfied. whichever you go with you will be happy. Just get the remote control (no foot pedal), it hangs around my neck and I can control the boat sitting on the back fishing chairs.

or group 29, yeah, see what dimensions you can live with for your available space.,, 8d,,, wow those are huge!! 8d is what we used to deal with in the big boats like hatteras and bertram for 36v boat systems.

Given that there are only 3 major companies making most of our recreational batteries given a specific amp hour rating you will most likely not go wrong.
In dealing with traditional lead acid batteries I have had good luck with Interstate which markets batteries make by Exide and Johnson Control. Delphi makes AC Delco and Everstart(Walmart batteries). Exide makes Champion, Exide and Napa as well as Everstart batteries not sold at Walmart. I have also had good luck with Die Hard sold by Sears and made by Johnson Control. If you start to get into the upper tier and away from traditional lead acid I prefer Odyssey however what Ken sells are on the same level with the Odyssey the last time I ran a comparison,,
Battery makes do switch manufacturers from time to time so just look at the amp hours, reserve capacity and weight....

yes, what Marc and Oldchuck say..... all those brands are really 3 manufactures for the most ordinary lead acid wet batteries, we are excluding the "exotics" here. I just went down to O'reileys and picked up 2 of their 27 marine deep cycles. I'm sure they are fine. Was looking hard at interstate but oh well. Saved a few bucks. I would put my thought effort into ratings and not so much about brand.

I will add that there is no "best" battery, without first identifying "best at what? Folks often make the mistake of comparing Cranking Amps when looking at deep cycle batteries. Cranking Amp ratings are based on how much power you can get for 3 seconds or 30 seconds depending upon which rating you are looking at.

Deep cycle batteries are best compared by looking at "how many deep cycles can I get" from the battery, not "what can get for 30 seconds only."

Marc,
I want to apologize to you because in post #34 I mentioned that Ken sold upscale batteries and it was you.
Sorry for the misleading mistake..Must be getting older...

Well I have an old 36 lb Minn Kota that has been beat to death going down rocky rivers for about 30 years.....still running perfectly. Zero paint left on it
And its been used in salt water as well.
Just guessing, but they are also probably the largest selling brand??? So naturally you would see more of them in any shop than the other brands.

As with ANYTHING you buy, once in a blue moon you get a lemon. I had a brand new 90hp Evinrude that NEVER ran right....luckily, some dumb ass stole it one
night and my insurance bought me a new one that ran perfectly for many years.

This has been a great thread with some very good information. I am adding an 80lb to my 22ft toon very soon so the timing of this thread was perfect. I am seriously looking at
the MIinn Kota Ultera auto deploy. My biggest question is shaft length, and mine will be used in salt 50% of the time.

Thanks and cheers

looks like I'm going with the same one just not sure what length I need 45 or 60 I want to go in some real shallow water and I have never owned or operate a trolling motor before 1st for me that why I'm doing so much research to make sure I'm getting what I need the first time and not get one and then wished I got something else I also asked a lot about the battery need ones that I can use every day for maybe 4 or 5 hours only thing I have no electric at my boat dock and will have to remove to charges I will be putting battery where they are easy to get off toon putting them under front seat want to put battery in a wooden box so I can just unhook lines and lift box out. Can't get any measurements right now boat is shrink wrap till April I hope

Two batteries and the box....you better start working out now....that's a lot of weight to carry.

I assume you are getting the salt water model? They are not cheap.
I have to wonder if there is seriously a difference other than paint.
I have heard seals are different, hardware is different. Why?? Water is water and it has to be sealed out, salt or fresh, right??
And I have seen rust on the white ones....

Still doing my research too. And btw, when mine is not in salt its in brackish, so pretty much always salt.
