Flip my deck

#1 Post by Crab Island Cruiser » Tue Jan 22, 2019 3:47 pm

I'm in the process of my winter project, replacing the old worn out carpet with Infinity Seagrass.

I already pulled the carpet and started the unimaginable task of trying to remove the glue from the plywood.
What PITA. If my deck wasn't in such good condition I would just replace it. Hell, if marine 3/4" plywood wasn't
$102 and change a sheet I would change it. lol

My question is.....instead of removing all the glue, could i just flip the decking and go on a bout my business?
I know i'll have to drill some new holes and such, but would there be any negatives with that side have been
exposed to the salt water for 11+ years?

I figured i'd at least put a light sand on it with the belt sander and re seal the joints with silicone and tape prior
to fastening it down.

TIA

I see your point but after all that work you still a good deck, not a new one

It's easy to say because I'm in the wood floor business ,but just sand the glue off. Go rent the toy drum sander from home Depot. A couple 40 grit belts and you're done. Way easier than redecking the boat. Those rental units are not good for refinishing floors but great at odd jobs like that. We have one in the shop for sanding the seams on new subflooring. It will make quick work of that glue.

When I say "toy drum" I mean a 110 volt small version of a real wood floor sander. Most rental shops have them. They are worthless on a wood floor but great for small odd jobs.

So I was able to flip the first two fwd sections of the deck. Not too bad. The decking looks great.

I'll check into that sander.
