Is this a fuel filter? I’ve never seen one like this.

That is the vent for your gas tank. It let's air in but keeps fumes from escaping.

I should also mention the it keeps pressure in the tank from backing up when the gas in the tank expands. It acts as a check valve.

Thanks Liquid. Apparently I don’t have a in line filter. I have a water separating one on the fuel pump. I guess I could just get one from the parts store?

Also, does it ever need to be replaced? I was going through a no wake zone and the engine died. It started back up but it’s done it a couple times.

The fuel/water separator is a fuel filter, and you also have one on the motor. You should probably change both.

Here's a link to replacing the one on the motor.

Do you think I should change the vent valve? It’s never been changed. Thanks for the advice.

I don't think you need to replace it. I would definitely change the fuel filters and go from there. I've always replaced my water separator/filter annually. Mine was a external spin on type.
