if you have one of these, does it CLUNK in gear or make a smooth non-clunking engagement ?

It all depends how quick you shift it in gear. Slow, you'll hear the gears and not so much when you do it quick. You get a feel for it over time. Is like shifting gears with out pushing the clutch and it all comes down to the right feel.

its the CLUNK I'm concerned about. I see you have same motor, how smooth does it go into gear.

Stainless props can cause this. What hub are you running.

hub kit ??? it's the. prop that came with motor. Enertia 15.6 X 13P RH. it did get that plastic ring thing that helps with prop cavitation, although it still cavitates some.

If you google "gear noise while shifting " for outboards/inboards the answer is 90% you're doing it to slow. Unless you have a problem with the cable not adjusted correctly.

The Enertia prop uses a hub kit. It is user replacable. It probably is the cheaper and older design Flo-Torq 2. If the noise bothers you a Flo-Torq 4 may reduce the noise. I think the weight of the prop and the quietness of the motor allows you to notice the gears smacking due to the back lash in the gears. That is my understanding as I remember it because my Yamaha F115 does the same thing. In my case, my stainless prop had a fixed hub, so I could not do anything about it.

I have a 2019 mercury 200 using the exact same prop enertia 15.6 x 13p RH and mine makes the same noise I noticed. However mine only does it when shifting slow (like others have mentioned). If I shift it faster, I don’t really hear the noise. It doesn’t really bother me much as I figured it was lash in the gears and the engine idles at 600 (way lower and quieter than my 78’ mercury 700 lol). Hope this helps

The gears engage hard when they are in good condition and that clunk is usually a good sign, not a bad one. Gear teeth are being forced into other gear teeth when one set of those gears is turning at or around half of the engine RPM speed. Because of the way they engage, it is never recommended to slowly slide it into gear since this causes excessive wear. You cannot shift too quickly. You can shift too slowly.

With all that being said, I would check your RPM at idle as anything over the 700 range can cause excessive wear.

This is the correct answer, the flo torque IV will eliminate the rattle at slow speed. The enertia is a heavy prop, and the imperceptible pause between intake and power strokes on 4 stroke motors they believe causes this rattle. the FLO torque 4 hub kit is designed to absorb this shock. now this eliminates rattle, not a clunk, which is pretty common on out boards shifting into gear, you don't ease them in, you quickly engage the shifter.
